Magnificent,
By Theseus "theseus" (US of A) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aeroflot: An Airline and Its Aircraft - An Illustrated History of the World's Largest Airline (Hardcover)
"...a panorama of the 70 years of considerable and continuous achievement."
This book captures both the mundane and the historical. Aeroflot, at the height, was remarkable due to "its vast and complex domestic network, many of whose subdivisions alone would equate in size to a very large airline." This provided millions of travelers basic air transport over huge stretches of land at bargain prices. Milestones celebrated here include the Polar Division affiliate with historical trans-polar flights, the world's first transport aircraft in 1913, the first bomber/transport, the world's largest helicopters, and the world's largest turboprop airliner. A handsome production, this: an oblong hardback, cloth over hardback boards with a sewn binding, 96 pp with something like 250 color illustrations: maps, tables, charts, elevations, photographs. The meat of the book consists of profiles of over 25 aircraft.

The late R.E.G. Davies was a great friend of mine and this book, along with others he had produced in this format, contributed significantly to the education of readers in the history of the international airline industry as well as aviation in general. His work will be missed. |
