2.0 out of 5 stars Silly editing ruined this dvd.., January 25, 2005

This review is from: Aerosmith - You Gotta Move (Amaray Case) (DVD)
Why why why why why do the clowns who edit these "live" concert dvd's continually insist on ruining the music by overlapping interviews and other bull sessions into the songs themselves? Didn't Sony learn their lesson after Black Sabbath's "Last Supper" editing disaster? Am I wrong to think that the job of a concert video should be to give the illusion of actually being at the event? What fan in actual attendance would sit still if during every song lead in, Steve Tyler turned down the volume and talked about his life experiences? I don't know about you, but it would annoy the hell out of me! It's a shame because You Gotta Move could have been a great dvd. The sound quality of the music is excellent! And I was very impressed with the track selection. Sure one could argue that there are several key Aerosmith tunes missing from the set list. But to play every hit from Aerosmth's huge library, the dvd would have to be 12 hours in length. What makes this dvd fall flat on its face though is the totally inexcusable editing job. There's hardly a track on the entire dvd that isn't partly interrupted by the band members chatting about things we already knew and that could have easily been added in the bonus section. If that's not annoying enough, the camera angles change each and every second or two throughout the show. It's kinda like watching while riding a spinning merry-go-round? You never really see anything but a blur as it passes by. As for all the fan shots (almost half the dvd), I have to wonder if there were any plain looking/non model types/small chested people in the crowd at all? You wouldn't know it by where the camera men had their cameras pointed all night? lol Anyway, being a die hard Aerosmith fan aside, i'm very disappointed that they dropped the ball with their first official live dvd. It would have been so cool to sit back and enjoy an awesome show without feeling the need to throw a hammer at the tv. 2 stars for the good music that WASN'T interrupted with gab and for the bonus audio cd that's music, music, and nothing but the music! As for the rest..arrrgggghhhhhhhh!

1.0 out of 5 stars THEY RUINED IT !!!!!, November 25, 2004
This review is from: Aerosmith - You Gotta Move (Amaray Case) (DVD)
Let me start by saying I am one of the biggest Aerosmith fans in the world. I've seen them on just about every tour since '76, and along with perhaps only the Rolling Stones, they are the premiere kick ass rock n' roll band in a live situation. Steve Tallarico's Dad, Victor, even taught me music in high school in Da Good Old Bronx and man I remember how proud his Pop was of him when they got their first Platinum record (Toys) and Steven bought Pops a brand new BMW cash. Steven are you reading this ? If so please drop me an e-mail. So of course it was with great expectation that I and everyone looked forward to this, their FIRST, and LONG OVERDUE, concert DVD.

Okay so they go through the mandatory self serving bull***t in the opening, talking about what it feels like to go onstage, the magic of the band on a great night, how they all click together, yada yada yada. OK great, get to the show. First song or 2 great, nice slick production, great video, great mix, great shots of all the hotties in the audience young and old, but I noticed they are talking over the opening chords of songs.
Then as we should be settling in like at a real show by the 3rd or 4th song, when we should be getting to the nitty gritty, this babbling nonsense between the songs is strarting to slowly give me a sinking feeling in my gut.

But the turning point came during "Draw The Line", one of my favorite live Aero songs. As Joe Perry prepares to go into his incredible slide guitar lead break..... the MUSIC fades down, a 2 box comes up of Tyler the talking head still talking about this or that nonsense, with the second box showing the band onstage and Perry is COMPLETELY drowned out and buried in the mix by this droning voice. Then the 2 box finally pulls back to full screen of the band and the music comes back up and we are given the special treat of enjoying the last 15 seconds of the Perry's lead break. This was the musical equivelant of getting interrupted during a sexual climax. I actually threw my shoe at my TV screen, took the disc out and winged it across the room like a frisbee, I was so freaking angry. I see in the opening credits that the band themselves are the Executive Producers of this DVD, which means THEY were responsible for overseeing the final edit. Then WHY WHY WHY, Aerosmith, did you have to go and RUIN what COULD HAVE BEEN the greatest live Rock n' Roll Concert DVD of all time with all your psycho babble in between and DURING songs ? WHY could you not have simply given us the complete uncut show, seamless, and put your interviews and commentary on a SEPERATE chapter of extras on the disc ?? I am still shaking my head in wonderment. I have been in Television Production for 20 years, and this smacks of a creative decision made by an amateur(s).
The little nuggets of music are there, the production is there, the video and audio quality are there, but it all fell apart in the Final Edit. Too bad, this disc could have been a real contender for top live concert DVD of all time. Instead it turned into an abortion. Please, next time, Aerosmith, (if there is one), give us the full show uninterrupted, like we were there.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too Slick To Stick, December 2, 2004
By
This review is from: Aerosmith - You Gotta Move (Amaray Case) (DVD)
Plenty of people have talked about the annoying voice-overs, so I'll pass on that part.

This is a good performance, but a tacky editing job. A&E were stuck in the past when they edited this performance, loading it up with hired models pretending to be girls in the crowd. Find me a woman under 25 who knows 70s Aerosmith lyrics, and I'll buy you this DVD. There are also plenty of "glory shots" of band members where it's clear they are not playing the parts you are hearing. I find that unacceptable because it just doesn't add anything - I already know they are cool, I don't have to be convinced.

What saves the whole thing in the end is five performances included as extras which must have been edited by someone else. These are clean shots of the songs with no extra frills, and they are simply amazing.

Guitar fans: Joe Perry busts out a double neck black Gretch for Living On The Edge that probably resulted in a call from his buddy Jimmy Page looking for a Christmas present. Amazing tone!
