4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Fireside Romance
Viscount Colin Sedgewick thought he had died and gone to heaven, for it could only be an Angel with fiery red hair and cool and gentle hands slowly stroking his face that was ministering to his needs. 2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I have read many of Hern's novels and was suprised that this was written by her too.
The story was silly! Based on a misunderstanding that no sane person who is not a child would buy into!
It almost felt like the author had to write something; like she had a deadline and was forced to write something when she was not at all inspired to do so!
Please...

Viscount Colin Sedgewick thought he had died and gone to heaven, for it could only be an Angel with fiery red hair and cool and gentle hands slowly stroking his face that was ministering to his needs. But as he slowly regained consciousness, the pain that was radiating from every part of his body, let him know that he was still alive.

As she and her brother came upon the wrecked curricle by the side of the road, Meg Ashburton recognized at once that he was Lord Sedgewick, the one and only man that had asked her to dance at her disastrous season six years ago in London. How could she not? She'd fallen in love with him then and had never forgotten his kindness and his beautiful sweet smile. Naturally he couldn't possibly remember her as the tall, skinny, and extremely awkward, young girl from the beautifully filled out young woman she was now. In bringing him to their home at Thornhill, Meg and her family would help him to recover during his convalescence.

As he convalesced, Sedge came to look forward to the very sound of her footsteps in the hallway, and couldn't wait for the day he could hold her in his arms. Meg thought he was looking at her with more than just friendship but eavesdropping on his cousin speaking of Sedge's many conquests, she realized that Sedge would never marry her. Therefore, when Sedge nervously made what she considered a very inappropriate proposal, Meg was devastated in thinking that he could have so disabused their hospitality and insulted her so. Sedge was just as devastated, thinking that he'd read her feelings so wrong and she harbored no feelings for him. Much later, Meg thinking that her virtue was doing her no good, if she let the only man she'd ever cared for walk away decided to go and tell him she changed her mind. Unfortunately, it might be too late as accident upon accident seemed to be shadowing Sedge with increasing frequency.

*** This was an enjoyable and sweet traditional regency romance giving the reader a fully robust taste of regency England under the skillful pen of this enlightened author. The flavor is very Jane Austen, with a bit of a mystery that, although easily surmised, will keep the readers interest. The author's character studies are also very well done with great interactions between the leads. The romance itself was cute and `long Meg' a refreshing and likeable heroine. This is the perfect romance for a nice fireside read on a cold and blustery Sunday afternoon. --- Marilyn, for www.historicalromancewriters.com ---

4.0 out of 5 stars a better than usual Regency romance, August 1, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: An Affair of Honor (Signet Regency Romance) (Paperback)
Want a little mystery with your romance? This is the book for you. Viscount Sedgewick is recovering at the home of Meg Ashburton. He met Meg briefly during her only London season. Meg has bloomed since her season and is much more attractive. Unbeknownst to him, someone is trying to kill Viscount Sedgewick. The suspense builds nicely as the romance slowly progresses and the mystery deepens.

Please read some of her other work cause she is a good author of this genre BUT avoid this one.

I have read several of Candice Hern's books and enjoyed them. I hesitated to purchase this one though, but was swayed by the glowing reviews. Did I read the same book?

This book is absolutely predictable. Since it's a romance, you know the 2 leads will end up together. From the book summary, you know the heroine Meg is already in love with the hero. Also, from the moment that a certain character is introduced, you know who is making attempts on the hero's life and why. It is patently and immediately obvious. You also know those attempts won't succeed. No tension or anything to resolve whatsoever. The "Big Misunderstanding" played a role in this very weak plot, but it was not even a good "Big Misunderstanding".

This book dragged on and on and was boring. I have never skipped and skimmed so many pages in my life. Too much telling, not enough showing. Since everything was so predictable, I never had to go back to fill in for anything I skipped.

I also didn't find it true to Regency customs. When Sedge was sick, Meg spent hours and hours alone with him in the bedroom, nursing him to health. There was never a mention of a chaperone being present at all time, which would have caused her to be compromised. Also, were there no servants who could have seen to Sedge, such that Meg, her grandmother and her brother (?!) did not have to look after him 24/7? Finally, Meg's family ran a business, which means they were in trade. Not "good ton", at all. They would not even been invited to the society balls and routs of a London season.

There are better Regency romances out there and better books by Candice Hern.

4.0 out of 5 stars Third installment, July 28, 2011

He's injured, she his "angel." If you like a likeable H and a going against the flow h, this is one you may enjoy. If you like mystery (but can figure it out before the end) it's there. I enjoyed Ms Hern's unfolding of a love story minus the ultimate "meeting." Necking and foreplay is tantalizing...throw in miscommunication (how do they come together again?) and a duel and you come up with "An Affair of Honor." Enjoyable read if you are detail oriented.
Third installment to...(1) "A Proper Companion" Robert and Emily, (2) "A Change of Heart" Jack and Mary and this one (3) "An Affair of Honor" Colin ("Sedge"wick) and Meg by Candice Hern.

I really liked this book. I loved the cover. Neither of those really matter when you know the author. She never fails.
I didn't know that it was the last of the series until I got started, but that didn't matter. It is good enough on its own.
This book started well and ended better. With just enough humor to keep a smile on your face.
I don't think anyone can read this book without saying I know those people.

Great book. Picked it up because it was affordable and really liked it. Had been used to very HOT romance Regencies, but found that Candice's style of warm romance was extremely pleasant and left nothing out!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Valet Did It? Really?, September 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a lovely story about a beautiful wallflower, her handsome honey bee, her sweet but meddling grandmother, and the circuitous route that finally brings the two of them full circle. Along that route he suffers a series of mysterious accidents. At a critical moment in the story line, she figures out who is behind these 'accidents.' They also figure out there's been a series of misunderstandings that have kept them apart. They clear that up and, we hope go on to live happily ever after. I really liked this story. Initially I gave it four stars. After removing my own bias of too much time being spent on what the characters were thinking, I gave it the five stars it deserves. The story was written during a time when we the readers were more contemplative about who our characters were and what made them tick. Nowadays, we want to figure that out based on the story line.

Someone is trying to kill Lord Sedgewick and he ends up injured near Meg Ashburton home. Meg had crush on Sedgwick 6 years ago when she first entered society. Meg and Sedge fall in love has his leg is healed as a traditional Regency story there are lots of misunderstanding.
