One of the weaker in this classic comic series from Europe., April 8, 2010
This review is from: The Affair of the Necklace: Blake & Mortimer 7 (Adventures of Blake & Mortimer) (Paperback)
Finally, after many years after Comcat put out a couple of Blake & Mortimer albums, someone is putting this series out in English. I've long heard about this series, but had never read it. It's great that they have, and I plan on getting all of them.
If there is one issue I have, its that I wish they had reprinted them in their original order. This is NOT the seventh B&M story, but actually the tenth!! Cinebooks is including a list of all the B&M books in order, showing which ones they have reprinted, and the next ones. At least this is one done by EP Jacobs, B&M's creator. I do hope they reprint the first story (a three-parter) and the last 2 done by Jacobs, as well as the 2 reprinted by Comcat. While I enjoy seeing the later non-Jacob albums, I wish they'd focus on him AND step up their reprint schedule with this series. 2 per year is just too few.
This story is, IMO, one of the weaker of the series. There is very little of science-fiction adventure feel of other albums, which seem a standard mystery, dealing with the theft of a valuble necklace. Our old enemy, Col. Olrick is back, having escaped from the previous adventure (probably SOS Meteors, as he wasn't in Time Trap). Too much of talking heads and no enough action, in my mind.
Sadly, the list of upcoming albums show that the next 4(!) albums will all be post-Jacob albums, reprinting #14, #16-18. As they are only doing 2 a year, it will be 2 years before that's done, and we can hope they go back to the Jacob albums they've passed over.

An entertaining book, April 28, 2010
This review is from: The Affair of the Necklace: Blake & Mortimer 7 (Adventures of Blake & Mortimer) (Paperback)
I am very thankful for Cinebooks.
Instead of the 'normal' graphic novels we are accustomed to reading in North America of repackaged 6 issue series from mainline publishers, their products are new (to us), and not reprinted comics. A second reason I appreciate series like Blake and Mortimer is that it is not superhero related.
For that, I am doubly thankful.
Onto the book, "The Affair of the Necklace" is delightful, but not overly impressive. It, unlike the Strange Encounter, is not science fiction but rather a 'mere' detective/suspense book that focuses on the search for a necklace with rare beauty. Marie Antoinette's necklace is going to Queen Elizabeth II, and someone does not want it to happen!
That sets up a 62 page search for Olrik and the necklace that just may turn out to be the biggest theft ever, or the biggest deception. It clearly draws on such 'chase' and 'collect' tales like the Pink Panther, and the Maltese Falcon with complex and sometimes scenes that seem too long.
Good story, good art. Good value for $15.95. Highly recommended.
