From the Author

Two love stories, two affairs of the heart in one book. In them lives all passion I have for history and adventures, time-traveling and thrillers, mysteries and great love.

From the Inside Flap

A snippet from  Affairs of The Heart; from the second novella The Last Secrets of The Ancient Island: "I wanted to see the face, to look into the eyes of the dangerous driver who scared us with his crazy driving, caused a series of collisions and accidents on our streets and placing the life of each of us in danger and uncertainty. I still remember the squeal of the high-speed tires and the sense of an evil menace and I wanted to rage at him, to strike him. I expected... "Michael sighed sadly and, forgetting everything and everyone around him, he lapsed into the memory of that time. "In the hospital, I ran up the stairs and I looked in the room to peer over medic's shoulder. There were a multitude of tubes and wires. The intravenous system and respirator were attached to the body in the bed, to keep the driver alive. I saw the ashen skin, dark rings around the eyes, fragile hands--they were already powerless to hold the wheel. The body was worn, similar to a shadow. It was a young woman who wanted to die, who searched for death on the road as fast as the car would go. And to take another life with hers so she wouldn't be alone when she drew her last breath."

A Love in Time of War is set in Bulgaria and Turkey between 1915 and the 1930s. It is a rite of passage, about a young woman's love for her family, and for the man she meets who is from a different culture, and an enemy country. Maria is highly educated and intelligent, but aged 18 she is still immature and naïve. She meets Mustafa, an older man who has experienced life on the front line of war. He is a highly ranking government ambassador, so he is careful and considerate in his actions. But he is also headstrong and vain, so when he wants something, he gets it. I am intrigued by the way this story is set out. We begin in the 1930s, and flash backwards and forwards as the story unfolds. It seems to be written almost like a memoir, and I like the short `chapters.' It contains some beautiful descriptions, and although the language sometimes seems a little too modern or awkward for the period, it does seem to fit the tone. This is not a fairytale, it is a reflection on real life and true history. It almost brought me to tears at one point, because I became so involved in the love story of Maria and Mustafa, and all of their obstacles. Love is enduring but it doesn't magically fix everything. Maria must obey her family and put on a brave face. Mustafa experiences battles of a different kind, and learns the harsh realities of love between enemies.

The Last Secrets of the Ancient Island is an addictive read about the lives of ordinary people. It is set in a town at the base of Mount Etna National Park, so it mixes historical significance with contemporary intrigue. The central characters are Michael and Kate. He is an architect and she is married.

Two thought provoking novellas that had me riveted to every word. Explore the mysteries and secrets of an old town or the hardships and trials that two people go through for the sake of love.

"The Last Secrets of The Ancient Island" offers a look into the mysterious town that holds many secrets and legend, but the thing we all desire most and is the cause of much debate is love. The story captured and held my attention from the first page.

"A Love in Time of War" is a heartwarming and passionate tale of how two people will try to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles in the course of love. These characters were so captivating that I found it a little sad when it finally ended.

Check out this wonderful book by Borislava Boris ova "Affairs of the Heart".

This is two novellas in one volume with the theme of love running through them.

I initially found these hard to get into. I had to keep stopping and starting, but once I had got past the 'sticky' bit I started to enjoy the book. The first novella concentrated on the secrets of a town in Bulgaria and was steeped in history. The second told of the trials and tribulations of everyday love. The pace was initially slow, but then picked up in the second story to almost breakneck speed! The characters were solid and believable, and I identified well with them. The stories themselves were bitter-sweet but enjoyable. A very good effort from the author.

While I wanted to like this book, from the very beginning the book was extremely hard to get into. With no real explanation or starting by meeting the characters, I was thrown through a loop with two people - who seem so different - meeting in between churches to keep their love secret. From there the story goes back two years to before they meet and things start to get complicated. Normally I love a story that goes from beginning to middle to end and back again but more than once I had to restart a section to figure out if it was before their original meeting or after. Characters were being mentioned several times with no clue as to which side of the relationship they were on. I wanted to like - or maybe love - this book. The premise behind it, about love trying to concur all is something that romance fanatics dream of, but this book just fell flat for me. Maybe one day I will be able to get past my concerns within this review and try the book again but I don't think this is one that I can ever really enjoy without putting a lot of work into it.
