Unfortunately, those in denial saying they had not a clue, are trying to protect themselves from appearing foolish for seeing the signs and not doing anything.
The author uniquely reveals that an affair is not always a laison with another person. Affairs can be had with activities such as shopping, gambling, TV, spousal abuse, alcoholism, drug abuse, workaholism, over spending etc., any of which can threaten a relationship as surely as an affair with another.
