If you are on the fence about buying this product, please read my story below.

I've always had short, brittle hair, and never really understood why. I'm 30+ and have been relaxing for 20+ years. Stylists fought my hair with relaxers, letting it burn until I blistered and cried because my hair was so "stubborn." It was so humiliating that I began to relax at home. When my hair wouldn't cooperate, I tried weaves, braids, naturals and texturizers, all to no avail - it was just as stubborn and wouldn't do what "everyone else's hair" was doing.

As an adult, I went back to the professionals - what a joke! They'd laugh to see me coming, belittle me for improperly caring for my hair, then use `Super'-strength relaxers, coat my hair with greasy products to give the illusion of health and sheen, and send me on my way. Days later, I'd have excessive dandruff and have to wash my hair - and without the greasy salon products, I'd be left with cotton-candy, fly-away, dry, brittle hair. I'd be too ashamed to explain this to the stylist, and suffer with it for 7 weeks in silence - and the cycle would repeat.

A year ago, I did some research on dandruff and learned its modern theories. Actual dandruff, which experts have begun to theorize as a rapid overproduction of skin cells produced when pores are clogged and the cells shed excessively, is NOT the same as dry scalp or flakes. It explained what was happening to my hair: the relaxers stripped my hair of all moisture and strength but didn't relax the kink of the shaft, daily heat (flat iron, hot comb, blow dryer) was then used to straighten the shaft completely which fried my hair, then daily excess oil and grease was used to help it lay down/stay curled/shine, which resulted in clogged pores and regular dandruff outbreaks.

I finally had a professional consultation - and after listening to my hair history, the stylist used an Affirm Moisture Plus Conditioning relaxer. For the FIRST TIME in my life, my hair is healthy. Without using a ton of greasy products, my hair lies down, moves, holds a curl, stays wrapped and eliminates the need for a flat iron every morning. The color is healthy, it feels silky and smooth, and it doesn't break off all the time. Because I addressed the problem at the root (the relaxer), I no longer have to go through so many steps to manage my hair - resulting in less products used and dandruff outbreaks only occur when I'm overdue for a touch-up and start with the heat & grease routine (old habits die hard) to help it lie down.

I am now self relaxing, but with extreme caution, because I want to achieve salon-quality results. While the Avlon products have salon-prices, they are worth EVERY cent, and I will never use another relaxer in my hair. See below for directions and some of my personal tips (I am not a professional, but this is what has worked for ME).

-Relaxers THIN your hair and strip the hair-shaft, while relaxing the kink or wave. So you NEED the 5-in-1 or Positive Link conditioner to protect your hair and restore the pH.

-After using the normalizing shampoo, apply a HYDRATING deep conditioner to your hair for at least 5 minutes. Use any kind you like (I use Paul Mitchell's Super Charged Moisturizer conditioner) as long as it re-hydrates the hair.

-MOST IMPORTANT: DO NOT BUY THOSE BOOTLEG INDIVIDUAL RELAXER APPLICATIONS - they are NOT supposed to be sold that way.
A. The AMOUNT of Affirm liquid activator you use determines the STRENGTH of the relaxer.
B. When you purchase a complete box set, Avlon includes a measuring cup that shows you how much activator to use for your desired strength. My personal experience with the "bootleggers" is that they don't EVER put the correct amount of activator in the little plastic bottle they attach to the crème relaxer - too much will fry your hair, too little does NOTHING.

Using Affirm has made me more confident in myself as a woman. I no longer feel ashamed or embarrassed about my hair - I now know that the problem is not my hair, my genetics, or my ability (or lack of) to care for African American hair. I wish I could go back to my old salons and laugh in the stylists faces.

Finally, I'm a real, everyday consumer who self-relaxes unprofessionally, not a spokesperson for Avlon.

This hands down the best relaxer system I have ever used on my hair. I have course to medium textured hair. This relaxer breaks down my hair fast enough so that it does not damage and it does not burn my scalp at all. It also has a very lite to no smell at all. After using this relaxer you will never go back to using any over the counter junk with the pretty girl on the box again.

This relaxer is great....probably the best I have ever used on my hair (medium with sensitive scalp). Apply it with the steps indicated in the directions and I get perfect healthy looking hair every time. Straight without combing through but hair has lots of movement!

I ordered this product based on the rave reviews here. It came without any instructions in the box. I contacted the company directly (not the seller) and they wrote back that this is a salon product only. So this review is not about the product (which likely is very good) but the fact that how it is marketed here is deceptive.

Plus, there is strong evidence that all these rave reviews (with the possible exception of one) are planted--most of the "reviewers" have only reviewed this or other Avlon products, and have never reviewed anything else on Amazon.com. So buyer beware: before you buy this or any hair product, be sure it is intended for home use. It is useless to me without instructions.

As I posted to another reviewer, this product is listed for Professional Use Only! This is not an "over the counter" type relaxer! You REALLY need to know what you are doing to use this product.

As I stated before, this is the best relaxer I've EVER used and I am a REGULAR consumer - I am a single mother working in corporate america. If you don't believe me, check out my eBay rating - it should be the same as log in here. If not, it's michele5389.

After using Avlon Affirm products I could never go back to buying the other stuff. This is why I was online at Amazon - I was looking for a better price and ran across these negative reviews.

PLEASE do not believe the negative reviews; HOWEVER, if you are not a professional, I would recommend you go to a salon where the use Avlon products and let them relax your hair. You will not be disappointed.

I THOUGHT THIS KIT HAD WHAT i NEEDED TO RELAX MY HAIR. I COMPLETED EACH STEP, AS WAS WRITTEN IN THE INSTRUCTIONS. I FOUND OUT THAT THE KIT DID NOT HAVE THE NEUTRALIZER. MY HAIR WAS BURNED AND RUINED!! IT SEEMS RIDICULOUS THAT THEY WOULD SELL THE KIT AND NOT INCLUDE THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEM... THE NEUTRALIZER! IT IS WHAT STOPS THE CHEMICAL PROCESS. WITHOUT IT, YOUR HAIR WILL BURN OFF, AS DID MINE. THIS IS URGENT FOR EVERYONE TO KNOW!

I actually did a touch up on my hair with this product yesterday which is Thursday. I ordered the relaxer kit from bluebeez on amazon and it came fast. This affirm perm is great!I did it myself and I just totally love it.I may do a video review later but its just so great.

I've heard a lot about this relaxer and I decided to give it a try. This is a very good relaxer, yes it's expensive compared to most relaxers but....it's a salon product and salon quality. You get what you pay for.

Great price. If you look in the beauty stores they break down this kit and divide the activator to make a set and charge almost $15.00 for one kit! I know this way this product wasn't contaminated.

It's easy to use and the results were great!

After using no-lye relaxers for most of my life with terrible results, I did the big chop, grew out my hair natural for 2 years and then decided to try a relaxer again. I have kinky/course 4b-c hair type. After much research I decided to try lye relaxers and affirm one-out because it comes as a kit with 4 steps including conditioners. I did it yesterday and am very happy with the results. I washed and deep conditioned one week before, co-washed and added coconut oil 2 days before (I work out a lot) based my scalp and ear tops with Carol's Daughter healthy hair butter twice (making sure not to get too much on my new growth) and covered my ends only with Neutrogena deep conditioner. I followed the "normal" relaxer strength instructions for the exact amount of time. Lots of smoothing with only a hint and I mean hint of scalp sensitivity. It could've been my imagination because I was so nervous about it. Anyway, after I finished the 4 step system, I conditioned with the Neutrogena deep conditioner then roller set and air dried with Keracare mouse (and a dash of coconut oil). Everything came out perfectly. I'm happy to answer any questions.
