This Book is a Soothing Recovery Tool of Mine.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Affirmations for the Inner Child (Paperback)
I do have other affirmation books, but I think this applies to any type of recovery. It is not easy to build a good self-esteem when one already suffers from low self-esteem. Often I feel that I don't deserve a relaxed life, but this book encourages me to have fun in life instead of putting myself into a misery. This book has been a good guide to a better life for me. Also, I like the size of this book. This pocket sized book is always with me.

Affirmation For the Inner Child,
By A Customer
This review is from: Affirmations for the Inner Child (Paperback)
I read this book in 1991 and many times since. It is a precious book that I hate to lend to anyone else for fear I might not get it back but really really want other people to get to know it.These Afirmations are done with a calendar date on each page and that is how I used them the first time through now I use the index in the back of the book to choose the topic I need a particular day. The little stories let me feel safe and right and ok with where I am.They teach me different ways of looking at myself so I can put down the baseball bat that I use to beat myself with. They help me make sense of my thinking which without this book seemed to be the thoughts of a crazy woman. Long after the hoopla of the Inner Child revolution stuff has past this book stands out as one of if not the most meaningful book I have read. I thank you from the bottom of my heart Rokelle Lerner.

I have given this book to many of my friends, including many of them that are not in any formal recovery program. They have all told me that these readings help them in a variety of ways. I own many daily reading books and this in the one I carry in the car. This is truely a book for healing the inner child in all of us.

I believe this little daily meditation book was designed to be read by the calendar date indicated on each page. If you are looking for some sense of direction this book is an absolute MUST. Even if you read it by just letting the book open to any page, you will find that there's something going on in your life TODAY that the daily reading will address. These are ideas on which to focus as you go through your day with simple ways to shift your perception of the events in your life. This is a way to sense and enjoy freedom each and every day. Remember that though you may have forgotten times in your life, the child that lives within you has memory of everything and you now have the opportunity to re-train your child into a serene, responsible, joy-filled adult. Take 5 minutes to give you a wonderful gift first thing every morning when you awaken.

In my lifelong journey of healing/growth, I've been an electic seeker. Spiritually, I went from traditional religion in childhood, to agnosticism in college, to finally landing (and staying) with the spirituality of the Urantia Book. The Urantia Book: Indexed Version with free Audio Book on DVD (Can only be played on a computer with a DVD drive.)
Also spent time exploring Gurdjieff, the Enneagram, and many of the popular humanistic, self-help writers of the last four decades At one time or another, was involved in four different types of 12-step groups, while working with several therapists. Earned a functional graduate degree to support myself. Later did a year of graduate work in psychology (hoping for some healing). Eventually capped off formal schooling by earning a graduate degree in theology. During all these explorations, I wanted to acquire life tools while expanding my spirituality, to smooth ragged edges and facilitate integration. Unfortunately, however, neither I nor anyone else noticed the elephant in the room, and so I unwittingly circled around it. That elephant was my having been raised within the generational stream of addiction. Yes, I knew there was addiction in my grandparents' generation and my parents' generation. However, addiction didn't show up in our family, and so I remained oblivious. Didn't know that it's passed along as surely as genetics. Didn't know that because I wasn't an addict, that meant I automatically defaulted into the one remaining category: enabling. Also didn't know I was "programmed" to seek a partner to play out that syndrome with me, hence insuring we'd pass it to our children. 99.99% of emotionally smashed children eventually go on to produce more smashed children--until (hopefully!) somewhere in the generational flow, the cycle gets disrupted, so consciousness can enter. Before that happened for me, however, I paid dearly for my unconsciousness, as did those in my circles of influence. Life is persistent in sending lessons, however. Eventually, I stumbled onto a 12-step group specifically focused on adult children of addiction and/or dysfunction. The "big book" guiding this group immediately seemed like it was written all about me. It poignantly described how my inner child had long ago gone into hiding, and was still (even now) hoping for every child's birthright: to be loved and affirmed. Among other strategies for healing, the big book recommended doing the work of developing a Loving Inner Parent. From that group, I eventually discovered this book of affirmations. I'd seen other inner child books through the years, and they were OK. What made this book stand out was that it's uncannily able to see "her" as she's always longed to be seen: as a child in need of protection; as a beloved child! How wonderful it's been for me to be touched, enlightened, or amazed by the author's wisdom and kindness. As but one example, recently I read an entry while in a gray mood, hence expecting almost nothing. Completely against the odds, however, the compassionate, exceedingly insightful, empathy which rolled off the pages, managed to pierce my armor. Rarely have I had such an experience just from reading a book! That's why I cherish it. My goal is to slowly develop a Loving Inner Parent (a mature part of me, allied with my Higher Power, who can parent my inner child). For that major transformative task, the "voice" within these pages is serving as a role model. (Could there be a better one?!) Blessedly, my direction is now grounded in the tools/perspectives I need most, including this life-celebrating book.
