June Jordan (1936-2002) was a Caribbean American poet, novelist, journalist, biographer, dramatist, teacher, and committed activist. She wrote many other books, such as Some of Us Did Not Die: New and Selected Essays and Civil Wars.

Here are some quotations from the book:
