Grade 9 Up-The 32 essays in this title discuss the situation in Afghanistan following U.S. intervention and speculate about its future. The book is organized by questions such as "Has the Human Rights Situation in Afghanistan Improved Since the Fall of the Taliban?" followed by essays that take a pro or con position. Authors of the essays include Hamid Karzai, the current president of Afghanistan; Mariam Rawi, a member of RAWA (the best-known Afghani women's rights organization); Afghan warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar; and Kofi Annan, the UN secretary-general. An annotated list of organizations to contact for further information concludes the volume. A good choice to update collections and useful for reports and debate assignments.-Kathleen E.
