Grade 5-8-- An informative overview of this poor and often victimized country. Ansary points out that the 20 ethnic groups that make up the people of Afghanistan have shown great perserverance; they have always fought against intruders for the sake of their families and their way of life. Nonetheless, the battle has been costly; one third of the population are refugees. However, the author accentuates the positive. His discussion of the lives of children and families and the role of oral tradition reads with the immediacy of personal knowledge. His final chapter on an Afghan boy in the United States captures the spirit of his countrymen. Full-color photographs depict the mountains, the multicultural society, and the rural and urban areas. However, the index is weak in comparison with the wealth of information contained, and the one map is inadequate.
