5.0 out of 5 stars excellent for a beginner
I got this because I'm a crochet beginner and want projects done quickly, who doesn't? I've completed several projects in no time and all came out beautifully! The instructions are clear and easy to understand as well! A plus for any crochet collector!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not good for double crochet needles
I gave this book a low score because "on the double" meant (to me) that I could crochet these afghans with the double crochet needles. That wasn't the case.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the beginner or the advanced . . ., December 18, 1999

This is an excellent crochet book! Personally, it is my favorite. The patterns work up quickly and easily, therefore making it a great source for either the beginner, or for those who are a bit more advanced with little time. The patterns are beautiful, and extremely warm and cozy thanks to the double thickness of each. If you don't have this book, you need to add it to your collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars My All Time Favorite Afghan Book!, October 18, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Afghans on the Double (Leisure Arts #102662) (Crochet Treasury) (Paperback)
A wide variety of patterns. The afghans work up real quick and they are beautiful. There are patterns for all skill levels. My favorite one in this book is called Serene Ripples. Probably one of the easiest ripple afghans I have ever seen to make. A wonderful beginner pattern. Nothing but doubles and chains. I love it because you can use different colors, solids, variegated, and I have also done stripes. This particular afghan can be whipped up in a week or less. I have made four for gifts because they are so quick and inexpensive ($20 for the yarn) and the people who I gave them to absolutely loved them. Little did they know it was a quick and easy one for me to make!

After making my first pattern from the book, I don't care for one strand afghans. They seem too light and flimsy. These are thick and warm and still very flexible. Not stiff like I thought it would come out because of the multiple strands.

I have made four or five different patterns from the book. Like I said, it is my favorite one. Right now, I am hunting for it big time because I misplaced it during moving. If I don't find it soon, I will gladly buy another one so I can keep it in my collection.

A real winner of a book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome quick patterns., August 22, 2000

This book is a wonderful collection of afghans done with double strand of yarn that work up beautifully. If you need a quick gift or just in a hurry to see the beautiful results, this is the book for you. I have completed two of the patterns and was so pleased with the results that I have two more patterns started now. It will be hard to go back to using only one strand of yarn again. The patterns are easy and oh so quick!

This is a wonderful book for quick beautiful Afghans! From very basic to more advanced, there is something for everyone. All patterns are worked with two or more strands at a time, while still providing a wide range of patterns! There are basic filets, granny square, 'mile-a-minute' type, and everything in between, there are even baby patterns. Tons of fun and hours of enjoyment! Enjoy!

This has become my standby book for quick gifts. Beautiful afghans done in half the time with 2 strands of yarn and size K or larger hooks to work with. For hand made gifts when your time is budgeted, this is a great head start.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE RAINBOW, October 8, 2004

From the few books I got since I started crocheting a year ago, this is certainly a book I can strongly recommend. The instructions are very easy to follow, and the few afghans I completed look very classy. I specifically love those with the rainbow colors. The one for the baby is simple, fast, baby proof and the result is amazing. Got a lot of compliments.

This book is great, what I like to do is make the original pattern first and then make the same pattern using different colors. It has so much potential. You can change the colors and have a different afghan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doubly Delightful!, March 30, 2007
This review is from: Afghans on the Double (Leisure Arts #102662) (Crochet Treasury) (Paperback)
I've had this book for over a year now and I am so glad it is in my collection. I have only made one afghan from it so far, but I have made swatches for a couple of other afghans I'm considering. (I would love to try one of the cable afghans.) I sometimes enjoy just looking at the photos in the book. All the afghans are great looking and are nicely photographed.

There is a great variety of afghan styles to choose from among the 52 (!) afghans: classic, bold, lacy, serene, intricate, simple, handsome, and sweet. Some afghans are done as a whole cloth, others in squares or strips. Some patterns even include weaved strands of yarn to form a plaid look. The color pattern on the Blended Rainbow afghan is very clever.

Most patterns call for worsted weight yarn or worsted weight brushed acrylic yarn. None call for one of the trendy premium yarns, which while fun to use, could be unavailable next year. The instructions are relatively simple, most fitting on just one page of the book. (Only a few are a bit more complicated.)

Because you are working with two strands of yarn (either two of the same color or two different colors at the same time) and because you crochet with a large hook size...typically size N or P... the afghans work up quickly.

The one afghan I made was called Golden Waves, which called for a four-color pattern of soft waves. I made it for my nephew in blues and earth tones. He picked out the pattern himself from this book after looking through all my afghan books! It was fun to make and my nephew is very happy with it. Check out the photo I posted here.

Can you tell I like this book?! So did a couple of co-workers who looked at my copy and then went out to buy their own!
