This review is from: 100 Afghans to Knit & Crochet (Hardcover)
Of the 100 afghans, most are crocheted and of those 42 are granny squares by Janie Herrin to whom the book is dedicated. All projects have a full color picture and written out instructions (nothing charted). Almost all are made in worsted wt yarns. Some projects have appeared before in leaflets and the Herrin squares were once available online but they are now beautifully published here. Cover photo doesn't do the book justice. If you love grannies, this is a must purchase. Suggest waiting for the paperback version.

Afghans to KNIT and crochet???,
By Jyl Milner (Glendale, Arizona) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 100 Afghans to Knit & Crochet (Hardcover)
I agree with the previous reviewer - the crocheted afghans are pretty, and if you're looking for granny-square versions, this is a wonderful source.
However, don't be misled into thinking that knit and crochet afghans are presented in anything like equal numbers, as the book's title implies. Out of 100 afghans, a mere 14 are knit. Some are innovative, and some are just the same old thing all over again. I've read books and used patterns by Jean Leihauser and Rita Weiss before, and these seem to be up to their usual caliber. Overall, I give the book a 2.5. While most of the afghans are pretty, and are photographed nicely, the underrepresentation of knit afghans costs the book 2.5 stars from this (primarily) knitter. I probably would have scored the book higher if I hadn't been sadly misled by the title. Better wishes next time, ladies!

It will take you a lifetime to make all these afghans, but they are all a feast for the eyes. There is something for every taste and skill level.
Happy crocheting and knitting!

Be Prepared to Improvise...,

I am an experienced crocheter and have had this book for over a year now. In that time, three of the four patterns in this book that I've tried have had errors in the directions. The two most troubling problems were in the size of the finished product. For example, if you work the number of squares directed at the gauge indicated for pattern #73, you will end up with a piece dramatically smaller than indicated. And on pattern #37, the instructions indicate to repeat rows 3-11 nine times and then 3-10 once more. Doing so will barely use up 20 oz of yarn with the size hook and gauge indicated and the sizing you would have is about one half of the completed project size indicated. The first pattern I tried from this was one of the ripple stitch patterns, I don't remember which one, and I scrapped it after a few rows because there were stitches omitted in the instructions and I didn't feel motivated right then and there to trace down where the problem would have been and rewrite that part of the pattern.
I think the patterns in this book are pretty to look at, but anyone purchasing it for use needs to be prepared to improvise and in some cases correct or change stitching instructions. Perhaps I managed to hit on the only three patterns in the book with problems, I certainly hope it is the case, but I felt this was worth sharing as a cautionary note.

an error,

There seems to be an error in the #91 Cable Classic pattern. Row 14 is a wrong side row, but the instructions have you make the cable twist here
Not possible! Please correct this or help me in completing an otherwise lovely afghan.

What a pleasant surprise this book is. Great for crochet lovers, (not much for knitters). Well illustrated and easy to read type size. I can't wait to get started.
