Book Description

July 15, 2006
Outdoorsman Andrew Keith relates three trips at unique points of his life: down the Mississippi River to New Orleans; through the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, eventually to Hudson Bay; and through the Great Lakes to the St. Lawrence Seaway. From the solitude of the deep wilderness to chance encounters with strangers who offer shelter or a meal, from windblown days exploring unspoiled islands to frightening spills in whitewater rapids, from the sight of wolves and polar bears to the scent of salt marshes and pine forests, Keith describes a geographical and spiritual journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Especially recommended for armchair travelers due to the vivid and thoughtful descriptions., November 5, 2006
This review is from: Afloat Again Adrift: Three Voyages on the Waters of North America (Paperback)
Avid outdoorsman Andrew Keith presents Afloat Again, Adrift: Three Voyages on the Waters of North America, a travelogue of three of his canoeing trips: one down the Mississippi River; one through the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to Hudson Bay; and one through the Great Lakes to the St. Lawrence Seaway. A reflection of solitude and the joy of experiencing the wilderness and the sight of animals ranging from common game to wolves and polar bears, Afloat Again, Adrift embraces the explorer's spirit. Especially recommended for armchair travelers due to the vivid and thoughtful descriptions.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Memoir to Remember, July 11, 2010

This review is from: Afloat Again Adrift: Three Voyages on the Waters of North America (Paperback)
A friend invites 19 year old Andrew Keith to join him for a canoe trip exploring the upper Mississippi. Keith agrees and goes to the library to look at maps of the proposed trip. As he peruses the atlas, he sees that three watersheds begin in Northern Minnesota. Ultimately, his initial trip to explore the upper Mississippi leads him all the way to New Orleans. In subsequent voyages, he kayaks through Lake Superior, down the St Lawrence Seaway to the Atlantic....and on yet another occasion up (or should I say North) along the Nelson River to Hudson Bay.

Keith reports on flora, fauna and the various humans he encounters along the way.

It's a book full of adventure and learning....a book to get you out of your rut and into your dreams

5.0 out of 5 stars best canoe story, June 1, 2011
This review is from: Afloat Again Adrift: Three Voyages on the Waters of North America (Paperback)
I read Andrew Keith's Afloat Again Adrift in two sittings. The three different canoe adventures were educational, provacative and inspiring. The structure of the book is as unique as the far reaching continental journeys themselves. Count this one as a true canoe classic. It belongs on the book shelf of every Minnesota household. And beyond!
