Dated but still valuable for Eugene/Springfield area, February 13, 2008
This review is from: Afoot in Lane County (Paperback)
This was the first hiking book I purchased after moving to Eugene in 1987. While this hiking guide is dated (published in 1989), it is still valuable, mostly accurate, and gives hiking ideas that are closer and more numerous than other hiking guides.
Rather than focus on a larger region of the state, this hiking guide just looks at a single county in Oregon. Lane county is divided into 8 areas -- metro, coast, lowell, bohemia, mckenzie, oakridge, upper willamette, and waldo, depending on which direction you are headed out of town. Each area has a map showing hikes within that area.
Each hike has a trail map and description which often includes history and geology. The author includes an index and a small catalog of common trees and animals at the back of the book.
