Editorial Reviews

Straight from the dungeons of L.A., Wavves are release Afraid Of Heights, their fourth album and first on the Mom + Pop and Warner Bros. labels. Now a duo consisting of guitarist Nathan Williams and bassist Stephen Pope, they sound bigger, brasher, and shockingly more professional than ever on Afraid Of Heights which positions the band to take their rightful place amongst the pop-punk gods.

The product of more than a year of writing and recording, Afraid Of Heights expands the Wavves sound while remaining true to the band's original vision - it was created with absolutely no label involvement, a specter that nearly derailed King Of The Beach. Working with producer John Hill (known for his work with M.I.A. and Santigold, as well as with hip-hop acts such as Nas and the Wu-Tang Clan), the band found a willing party in creating what they felt was the truest expression of what they wanted. As for the Afraid Of Heights sessions themselves, Williams paid for them out-of-pocket, explaining his reasoning with, "In doing so, I had no one to answer to. We recorded the songs how and when we wanted without anybody interfering, and that's how it's supposed to be. "

5.0 out of 5 stars great album March 26, 2013
Format:Audio CD
So it's a bit self loathing. It's really bummer to play in a well known band and travel around the world playing for adoring fans (i get depressed just thinking about it). Wavves hit their stride on Afraid of Heights, combining Blue album Weezer with a Nirvana grunge sound that often uses the Pixies loud quiet loud quiet theme, this album is a pop record. It's got hooks that you can almost sing along with in fact you probably will, from the opener Sail to the Sun all the way to the end, the songs are catchy and implement fuzzy guitars and paranoid lyrics throughout, sure the theme gets a bit repetitive, but the songs are great and this is a cohesive album. I like the experimentation with new instruments like a cello on as it goes "Now I want to be your dog...." It's not the first thing you think of when you think Wavves, but instead of a sunny day at the beach this album is more like a Category 5 hurricane. I've had it on repeat since it has been on NPR. My favorite album this year and by the Wavves.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wavves Swing For The Fences March 27, 2013
Format:Audio CD
The immediate buzz of first listening to this caused me to hold back from reviewing so I could let everything soak in. After repeated listening and tequila over the past few days I must say this is as good, if not better than I initially thought. I'm an old fart and can remember the impact of first hearing Husker Du and Pixies "Surfer Rosa". Of course for me nothing will be that good again but these guys channel all of that energy and more via early Weezer, Nirvana, Sebadoh and some Brian Wilson sunshine. I love the earlier Wavves power pop lo-fi psych noise, but this is sort of a revelation...primitive BIG production sometimes ROCKS and the hooks are completely devastating my free world. A true damaged rock and roll classic for the summer of 2013. WELL DONE WAVVES and keep on ROCKING!!!!

he so definitely wants to be kurt cobain in many instances, but aside from that, it is still a solid effort and some really good song writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid album, but may not be making waves May 13, 2013

Good album, what you'd expect from Wavves. Nothing groundbreaking here, but a great sound. Only reason I'm not giving a 5 is because it doesn't seem like they tried anything new or different.

4.0 out of 5 stars some catchy songs and lyrics but some of it is a little too "high...
Like I said - some of it appears to be directed at 15 year olds.... no offence to 15 yo"s.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nirvanaish
This guys were inspired by Nirvana. Not even the Foo Fighters sound like old Nirvana so its cool somebody keeping that old grunge sound alive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Noisy, poppy, druggy
As expected, the new Wavves is pretty good, a little more accessible than previous releases, reminds me a bit of Modest Mouse right before they had their big break. Read more
