An African journey,
By Bodhi Heeren (Copenhagen) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Africa (Audio CD)
Over the past years this jazzguitarist turned singer/songwriter has produced a string of diverse, highly original albums, all of them nothing short of brilliant.World music elements have featured on all of her albums, here she has exclusively delved into the rich tradition of African music. And like the late great Joe Zawinul, Leni's take on the heritage of Africa is not a casual flirt, but a deep and sincere immersion in another culture. One could have doubts how wel her frail and fragile voice was suited to this kind of music, but as always she comes out strong thanks to her sheer musicality and emotional depth. And helped by the fine Malian vocalist Ami Saiko. There is a moving tribute to her old friend Michael Brecker, "1000 Stars", and his sax is even heard on two of the tracks. A host of brilliant African musicians play on the recordings, all anchored by the powerful drumming of Will Calhoun (of Living Colour). And, for the first time, there is also a cameo by husband Mike Stern. While Leni herself has dived deep into African musical styles in her guitarplaying, without abandoning her blues, funk and jazzroots. Another highly recommended album from this unique (female) artist.

real good and honest effort,Leni spent much time there and is going back to play with the musicians who contributed here. It sounds authentic - a real and unique addition to my cd library. Timeless.
