This is not a coffee table book in that there are no pretty full page colour pictures - everything is in black and white and generally quite small. However, for anyone familiar with African art who wants an exhaustive catalogue of the range of works available, this is an invaluable book - luckily, I had seen it in a book shop, so I knew what I was getting. Moreover, many of the pieces are major works or at least of significant aesthetic quality, which cannot be said of most published groupings of African art. Just make sure this is what you are looking for. Now, a full color version of this in two volumes with full page reproductions, that would be worth waiting for.

Format: Hardcover
Hardback, with illustrated DJ, 607 pages, 1,597 African tribal objects in black and white photographs, bibliography, 6 (sketched) maps. "Collectors" Index, "Styles" Index. Approx. 40 introductory pages of text, and short introduction to each section : Western Sudan, West African Coastal Region, Central Africa, Eastern and Southern Africa, and Arts of Utility. Includes masks, figures, doors, headrests, textiles, weapons, combs, jewelry, altar figures, staffs, vessels, reliquary figures. Credited to Warren M. Robbins and Nancy Ingram Nooter. Published by Shiffer Publishing in 2004.

A nicely ambitious and substantial catalogue of African tribal art in American collections. The volume aims to be as comprehensive as possible, and as a result the items themselves often suffer from being squeezed 4-16 to a page, and some of the black and white photography obscures the objects' details. Nevertheless, the scope of the project, (Over 250 collections, 1,597 items !), has to be respected, and this can be regarded as an important reference work on African tribal art in the U.S..

This is an excellent coffee table book. Any collector of African Art will appreciate the images and information. It even has a map of Africa showing all of the locations for the different tribes. Serious collectors of African Art should have this book.
