Yusef Lateef (b. 1920), a multi-instrumentalist who is equally skilled on tenor saxophone, flute, and oboe, is also a multiculturalist whose musical interests have long gone beyond jazz, a word he disdains. An innovator in mixing world music influences into jazz, Lateef is in his own musical category.
This review is from: The African-American Epic Suite (Audio CD)
this is a wondeful piece of music! brother yusef's epic is incredibly emotional and not the type of music you could play in the background at a dinner party (unless you know your guests very well and were planning a deep and cathartic evening). the piece takes you through american/african-american history from the stealing of africans from their home by slave traders to the present. the compositon is written for and performed by quintet and orchestra. what else can i say but check it out!
