Book Description

March 1999 0773478841 978-0773478848
Six of the eight studies reported were conducted solely or jointly by Harris (teacher education and human relations and social equity, McNeese State U., Lake Charles, Louisiana). After returning from five years in Africa, he noted that the condition of African-American males had deteriorated, but that all the studies were by professionals about the population. So he set out to report their own voices. The focus is on attitudes, identification, motivation, retention, and other factors in classrooms. The also consider African Americans in a predominantly white university, and the hidden role of traditionally male African-American Greek letter organizations. The text is double -- nearly triple -- spaced.
