While most school children are aware of such historical figures associated with colonial era America's war for independence from England as George Washington, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Patrick Henry, it is not commonly known by them that thousand of African-Americans (most of them slaves) also fought in the American Revolution. Some of them fought alongside the American patriots while others were engaged with those colonists who were loyal to the British crown. At first only blacks who were not slaves could enlist with the patriots. But as the Revolution dragged on, even the slaves took up arms, either along side the American slave holders or in specially recruited all-black units. This colonial era African-fought at Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, and Brandywine. Although they took the same risks as their white counterparts, no black man, slave or free, was ever permitted to rise above the rank of private. Superbly written, informed and informative, "African-American Soldiers in the Revolutionary War" is a welcome and much needed addition to both school and community library American History collection for young readers.

I was very disappointed. This is a little 48 page book written for children. I would have never paid what it cost had I known that. It is very much over priced for a book for children.
