4.0 out of 5 stars Good basic information but not what I was looking for
This is an excellent skin care guide but I think the reason some were disappointed was due to the fact we wanted to see great looks and get the info on how to recreate them ourselves. A better book for this is Kevyn Aucoin's "Making Faces". Its not "by us for us" but he tells you how to recreate looks step by step and has some really great glamour...

2.0 out of 5 stars A big no no..... ALMOST NO PICS
I have to disagree with the other reviewers. As someone just trying to learn how to apply makeup I didn't find this book helpful at all. I especially didn't like the use of drawings instead of pics. You can draw whatever you like but it's not the same as looking at a pic of someone who is supposed to have small close set eyes... you all know what I mean. I don't...

You can draw whatever you like but it's not the same as looking at a pic of someone who is supposed to have small close set eyes... you all know what I mean. I don't think this is a good book for the novice and that includes the skin care tips. Wash your face twice a day and don't use drying products. There that should take care of the cleansing routine and I have saved you some money to boot..... I expected better than this.

A better book for this is Kevyn Aucoin's "Making Faces". Its not "by us for us" but he tells you how to recreate looks step by step and has some really great glamour looks and pointers. I do recommend this book as a how-to guide for skin care. It's great for women starting to wear makeup or for anyone who never received the basics on skin care. For someone looking for more sophisticated looks or make up application...look elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Information; Terrible Color charts & pictures, June 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: African American Woman's Guide to Successful Make-up and Skin Care (Paperback)
I thought the book was good but I am disappointed in the color charts and the pictures in the book. The before and after pictures were in b&w so you missed out on seeing the full effect of the makeover. The color charts in the book were very poorly done, the colors were not clear or easy to recognize. Color theory is very important and I think more care should have been put into this chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very detailed!, January 11, 2000

This review is from: African American Woman's Guide to Successful Make-up and Skin Care (Paperback)
I was thrilled by all of the information that I received in "The African-American Women's Guide to Make-up and Skin Care". As a fashion and beauty consultant (Fashion-beauty.com), model and television host, I do extensive research on the subject of make-up and skin care. I love to share my information and I will definitely share this title with everyone that I encounter. Fornay has not spared any details for women who want to learn more about the care and enhancement of their skin. Thank you - Mr. Fornay!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on the market for ethnic skin tones, April 10, 2005
This review is from: African American Woman's Guide to Successful Make-up and Skin Care (Paperback)
This is a great book for any one who wants to learn how to apply makeup for themselves or others. This is the first book I've read that
actually gives you a color chart on matching lipstick, eye shadow and blush to skin tones. I was planning to attend a $400
2day seminar to learn makeup application, but with the information in this book and Daniel Green's video, I feel confident to start selling makeup.

5.0 out of 5 stars By far the BEST skin care, make-up book for all women!!!!!!, February 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: African American Woman's Guide to Successful Make-up and Skin Care (Paperback)
As a make-up artist who specializes in ethnic make-up and consulting, I have read and own most of the 'make-up, beauty' books on the market. The book is by far the best in terms of addressing proper skin care AND cosmetics for all women of color, and arguably all women. Although it has sketches instead of the nice glossy photos, this is the best beauty book I've read - period.

I purchased Fornay's book recently and I haven't put it down. Since I travel a lot, it's always with me. I read on the plane, in my room and whenever I can . I've learned so much about skin care and make-up techniques, especially for my skin and coloring. The compliments keep coming and I am assured that I look great. The African American Woman's Guide to Successful Make-up and Skin Care is the best book ever published on this topic. I am a proud owner!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mirror is Your Friend/Reflect a New You, January 28, 2011

Alfred Forney details how climate and geographical location affects the skin's health and appearance with a focus on nutrition as a key factor in it's upkeep and maintainance. His creative background and educational accomplishments are also highlighted and confirm his expertise in fashion and beauty. Susan L. Taylor is one of a few celebrity professional women profiled in good taste. Illustrations, in addition to useful sidenotes, provide you with quick tips and tricks to help you get that make-up job done right. After reading only a few chapters, skimming the book in it's entirety, I am curious to learn more. The application process is made easy. Although written for African American Women, Fornay's advise and techniques can be used by women of all colors. Tool usage and cleansing techniques are explored in early chapters. Fornay repeats important information by including it again as needed to link beauty knowledge together in order to help you remember what you've learned. This book is great for the novice or the professional on the come up. Skin layers are discussed in detail but written using clear and precise language preventing confusion. After reading just a little bit of this book, you will want to tell all your friends. Every black teenage girl needs to read this before her first application of any cosmetic product. A new way to think and feel about your make-up routine and how you touch your skin. Nothing short of beauty in a book and expertise on a face.
