This text comprehensively discusses African-American women and their environment. The contributors to this volume are diverse in both training and background and reflect information necessary for scholars and service providers to be successful in understanding and working with this population. Chapters on mental health, health care, and identity provide much-needed background information often missing in both contemorary and historical writings on African-American women. The theoretical perspectives of the editors and contributors place the experiences of African-American women in an appropriate global context.
