Book Description

August 2004 Milner Craft Series
The African Cross Stitch Collection is the culmination of years of work and research on African life and its fascinating customs. The works show the wonderful abundance of scenic, plant, bird and wildlife that so naturally subsist in the sunshine filled environment of Africa. Trish Burr has designed a collection of cross stitch projects, depicting enchanting images of everyday African.life in a semi-realistic, bright, colourful and vivid way, from sunrise to sunset, and has added little folklore stories to accompany some of the designs. The projects progress form quick and easy designs towards more challenging projects for the advanced stitcher. An additional alphabet chart and motif library are included so that readers can design their own projects.

More About the Author

Trish Burr is a self taught embroiderer. She was born and raised in Zimbabwe. In 2004 she moved to the Western Cape in South Africa with her husband and their three children.

She teaches and gives talks at workshops and guilds in South Africa, and contributes internationally to needlework magazines and other publications.

Her projects are mainly floral but she has recently expanded her work to include birds and portraits, devising means to include minute details in her subjects. Her emphasis on light and shadow brings her embroidery alive and her artistic use of colour further enhances the three dimensional effects in her work.

Trish is recognized for her unique style of long and short stitch embroidery. She has spent many years researching this technique and willingly shares this knowledge with fellow embroiderers. To quote in her own words:

"We need to keep hand embroidery alive, but if we hug our ideas to ourselves, they will become lost and worthless in the future. If I give you a gift, I no longer have it, you do. However, if I give you an idea then we both have it, and if you share this idea with others then we have multiplied it, expanded on it and watch it grow."

A wonderful book with a vibrancy that only Africa can offer. Trish Burr has captured the magic of Africa suberbly well. A well detailed book with something for the beginner, as well as for the more advanced stitcher.

The charts are well defined, easy to read and just as easy to do. With folklore accompanying the charts, its makes for interesting reading.

A book worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars The African Cross Stitch Collection, October 4, 2004
This review is from: The African Cross Stitch Collection (Milner Craft Series) (Paperback)
This is a must for any cross stitchers bookshelf. The designs are fascinating and Trish has made use of the brilliant sunset shades and vivid colors associated with Africa which come to life before you as you stitch. Most designs have a dominant focal point such as a wildlife object which is framed by ethnic borders which are quite detailed but not repetitious. Every detail is outlined in fine black thread which gives it a dramatic feel and some metallic details are included to add sparkle. What I like most is that the designs can be used for any occassion both male and female, big or small and she has included a set of individual motifs at the back of the book so that you make your own designs. Will be looking out for a follow on to this one........

I have already reviewed this book, but now having had it for a number of months and worked from it I just think it is a book that every stitcher should have. Exciting colours, easy to follow and great fun to stitch. When are we getting the next one Trish?
