In an effort to spread awareness about the upcoming 1992 CITES (Convention in International Trade in Endangered Species) meeting to reconsider the 1989 ban on ivory trading, the National Audubon Society's DiSilvestro called upon Richard Leakey to write an introduction for his book, as did Boyd Norton for The African Elephant: Last Days of Eden (LJ 11/1/91) and Ronald Orenstein for Ele phants: The Deciding Decade (LJ 11/15/91). Leakey responded in slightly different forms, but similar content. His message in each introduction is compelling, (although in more detail for Orenstein): don't buy or display ivory; the elephant is not yet saved. DiSilvestro discusses the early history of human and elephant interaction and he includes an extensive chapter on the ivory trade, its history (dating from 1,450 B.C.) and its politics. The color photographs are vivid and well reproduced. Highly recommended, but with the possible demand for elephant books, any of these three titles would be a good choice. For libraries that must decide, Norton's elephant information is more localized to East Africa, Orenstein provides more personal perspectives from important people involved closely with elephants (researchers, wardens, Africans), and DiSilvestro covers human-elephant interaction in more detail. Profits from Orenstein's book will be donated to the International Wildlife Coalition's scholarship fund to benefit children of exemplary rangers.
