From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4-- Text and photographs successfully meld to create an informative book about the African elephant and its threatened survival in the wild. Physical characteristics and behavior patterns that emphasize the social structure of the herd throughout the animal's long lifespan are presented. The clearly written text makes information accessible and interesting. A spacious format with large print and simple chapter headings and subheadings create an uncluttered background for Douglas-Hamilton's high-quality, full-color photographs. While smaller and less captivating than those found in her The Elephant Family Book (Picture Book Studio, 1990), they support the text and adequately show the animals in their habitat. Similar information can be found in Elephants (Lerner, 1981) by Cynthia Overbeck and Jane Goodall's Animal World: Elephants (Atheneum, 1990) by Miriam Schlein, but this latest title is a worthy addition to most collections. --Diane Nunn, Richard E. From Kirkus Reviews
A close look at the life and habitat of these ancient, seriously endangered animals. Patent describes the two kinds of African elephants (savanna and forest), then reports on recent efforts to save elephants endangered by poaching and habitat destruction. The color photos on every page are appealing, though some are dark or muddy, while careless captioning limits their usefulness (e.g., in the captions both kinds of elephants are simply ``elephants,'' leaving readers to ponder which is shown). Useful information on a high-interest topic, but a lesser effort from this prolific science writer. Index. (Nonfiction. 10-12) --
