1.0 out of 5 stars Recipe almost KILLED me
I borrowed this book from a friend. Read it thoroughly. Some of the information is valid (vitamins to take, foods to eat or avoid). Other opinions are old world wive's tales i,e., menstruation is not natural. OK, I can ignore the stupid stuff (although there shouldn't be stupid stuff in a book for Black people who already suffer as medical guinea pigs). What I found and...

5.0 out of 5 stars Grow beyond Lack of Knowledge, March 26, 2009
This review is from: African Holistic Health (Paperback)
This is addressed to all of the reviewers who didnt give this a 5 star.
I'm not going to bash or anything. Because that is not the type of person that i represent myself as.
However i must express certain truth rather if its liked or not.
Afterall, for some to give Dr Afrika bad reviews and try to criticize what he knows "which is far beyond any of us". Due to somes very limited perception in which they've of him
I'd then be foolish to waist precious energy correcting the misguided ignorant comments!
The truth is this: What we currently hold to have always been normal throughout current generations. Well after a little in depth research is employed. It becomes apparent then that we're interpreting things from a totally unhealthy abnormal perspective now.

Particular authors such as "Queen Afua" is addressing conditions and how to balance and treat them accordingly to our current conditions and circumstances.
Her information on "Menstruation" should already be understood that she is purely addressing the here and now perspective on things.
On the other hand: Dr.Afrika is addressing the "historical causes" in which took place throughout time. Which made the current condition manifest.
After "hollistically" reading "both authors" then putting them in their deserving perspectives.
A people then does not see any contradiction nor conflict in subject matter within the two of their writings whatsoever.

Its about "knowing" how to "discern" the important things spoken about in the past, and how those things've affected our way of living in the present. Example:When a family has a "Hereditary condition" in which started way back in their past. It can "Potentially" affect all current family offspring. Due to the past "causes" in which went on to "affect" the current conditions of the family tree throughout generations.
On the other hand: It's not set in stone that the particular family member/members have to buy into the idea that their current situation cannot be changed.
Its about what a person/people can learn about themselves which can change what once was accepted as normal.

Those who think from their own "Subjective Mindset" that Dr.Afrika is talking racism. Then i would humbly say to such people to please read down below.
Example: A Blue bird has a different digestive system from a Robin although they're both birds. Well the same rule applies towards people having different human biological constitutions, which was vital towards maintaining health within their indigenous dwellings.
The Creator gave all birds different biological digestive systems for very important "symmetry" reasons.
So we must become wise in understanding that the same rules apply towards human beings within their Genetic and Biological Constitutions.

As nature shows us that animals eat different. Then surely its equally trying to show us that people from different lands "was meant" to do the same. Does it mean then, that a Blue Bird is "Racist",from not eating a Robin's food supply!
Well a true lover towards all of humanity/nature is going to thoroughly tell you what is important for each of their survival. That is what this book is doing. By making you aware of your own unique constitution.
Because these things is what makes nature and natural laws as diverse as the various trees and rivers of the world.

P.S. Do yourself a favor and keep an open mind!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for holistic healing, January 9, 2002
I'm only 21 years old, and I picked up this book and boy is it great!.Dr. Llaila Afrika educates African-Americans about the numerous benefits of a holistic approach to health, which is rare in today's fat-ridden American society. This book is easy to read and contains many entries on which herbs and natural foods are used to treat what, how to apply them topically (externally), the evils of refined flour and sugar, the evils of alipathic medicine (Western medicine/technology) etc. A must read for all those who value their health. The reason why it didn't get 5 stars was because of all the editing mistakes (punctuation errors, etc.)

Worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to opening the universal oneness of SELF, September 6, 1999
Llaila O. Afrika expressed the complete oneness of the body and how each and every part of the human body is connected. The body, mind, and spirit are connected to form SELF. Dr. Afrika clearly defines how treatment of the body as a whole is crucial to wholistic health. The aches and pains that he body receives are indicators that something is out-of-sync in the body. Dr. Afrika shows different methods to bring the body back in sync with itself. The book express a deep need for each person to look toward thyself for treatment of SELF. The book describes a time when treatment with herbs, reflexology, iridology, vitamin and mineral supplementation was common practice. This is an excellent book for one who truly desires knowledge of themselves in dealing with health related issues. African Holistic Health is a remarkable book for someone new to treating the body, mind, and spirit as one BEING. When you awaken SELF, you awaken the Divine knowledge of SELF. I know that this book aids in aligning the wholistic body with the oneness of the divine SELF.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, April 7, 2004
By
Lee Thompson (Seattle Washington) - See all my reviews
My first encounter with this book was about 1995 a friend presented it to me, at the time I had no knowledge of Holistic health, reading this book open my eyes to many thing's that were unknown, even though there were things I didn't understand and had a hard time believing, I found myself drawn to at least try that which I felt pertain to me and I must say I owe yrs of pain free living because of this book. I lived with a lot of pain within my stomach from 1983 until 1995 doctors of traditional medicine were not able to tell me the cause or even a cure from what I was dealing with but soon after reading this book I found myself pain free and I could throw away the medicines I was prescribed and now I live life better with out the pain. I am thankful for this book. I recommend it to any one no matter the ethnic back ground it's a great book and a great author Thank you Dr Llaila O. Afrika

5.0 out of 5 stars The First & Final Word in Holistic Practice & Application, November 5, 1998
By A Customer
Dr. Afrika keeps it extremley simple and completly hands on. I personally learned more from Dr. Afrika in five minutes than every book on the subject collectivly. Once the origin of "Wholistic" is clearly defined by Dr. Afrika there is no question where the path of the sick or the healer should be directed next. African Holistic Health truly addresses the full spectrum of Mind, body, spirit, and how these three aspects of our being are neccessary in the successfull recovery from an ill lifestyle. Dr. Afrika has provided me with the tools to successfully heal myself and more importantly the ability to guide another to the eternal path of health and Wellness. African Holistic Health is "THE" definitive guide to true "Civilization" ; Upon first glance this book is hard to digest, this being reality because it clearly shows how far off the the path of Natural Law we have all strayed. This information is our divine right, thanks to our living ancester Dr. Imhotep Llaila O. Afrika, it has now return to us to awaken us from our savage amnesia. I am blessed to know such a blessed man.

5.0 out of 5 stars ancient future, May 1, 2005
Depending on who you are and what you know, the information contained in this book is either real ancient or real futuristic. For example, did you know that bowling, cards, see-saws were not really games at all,... that they are really devices for developing spiritual and improving physical health? Did you know that depending on the day of the week and the colors you wear, your health can be helped. And that different types of scented oils can bring peace and tranquility to a household depending on the day of the week.

And there is more fascinating, information that is sure to excite those of you seeking better ways to improve your lives. The current issue is fantastic and has an abundance of references for your own investigating. A great reference book, much needed by some.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, September 25, 2006
This review is from: African Holistic Health (Paperback)
This book lead me in the right direction towards enlightenment. It is ideal for the black aspirant of complete health (wholistic), while good for people of all races. It covers a wide variety of material concerning holistic health, human existance, psychology, behaviour, and also differnces between races. One might read this book and think that L.Afrika is racist, but the concept of racism is an illusion of the mind imposed unto us by our own ignorance of Self, and backed by a corrupt system of injustice.

Re. the previous reviewer:

1-2 cups of salt??????? Are you insane??? That had to have been a miss-print. For you to judge the book off of that miss-information shows your complete lack of judgement and common sense.
