I really loved these stories, particularly in discovering the many definitions and portrayals of love that inspired them. Most of the characters were very believable, and it is my opinion that the collection paints a fuller, more human picture of the continent from which its writers hail. While some of these pieces are sad, the element of despair that usually pervades the "disaster porn" of most African literature is thankfully missing, allowing another type of voice to come out of the continent.

There were also enough stories that I didn't feel cheated out of an enjoyable reading experience, as is sometimes the case with these short story collections, and there were also several very strong ones. I highly recommend Modi's Bride, which stood out to me as one of the more memorable tales.

A delightful anthology.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worthy of Ama Ata Aidoo's work, December 23, 2007

This review is from: African Love Stories: An Anthology (Paperback)
This is a very good book. I really liked the diversity of the characters, their situations, and the varied definitions of love. I think that this anthology is a good way for people to gain a better understanding of Africa and its peoples. My only qualm is that there are no male authors. I think the male perspective should have been included.
