Designed to convey ideas and social concepts and to awe and inspire onlookers, African masks are used in ceremonies that honor ancestors, communicate with the spirit world, validate political authority, or simply entertain. This calendar features twelve examples made in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by indigenous tribes from Mali, Nigeria, Gabon, Congo Kinshasa, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, and Burkina Faso.
