This review is from: African Prints (Schiffer Book for Designers and Collectors) (Paperback)
While the photos are fine, organized by type of pattern/image, there is not enough text or information on the various fabrics. The reader would benefit from an explanation of some different fabric types, like "kente" or "mud cloth". We never find out what these or others are, what they mean, where they come from, where you might find them, what they are used for, etc. There is Nothing on the background of the fabrics in this book, so while it pretends, with its intro, to shed light on Africa's textile arts and making "bridges to cultures other than one's own", it actually shows a random sampling of textile patterns, some of which are made more for Western consumption, some for people there, by anonymous authors used by anonymous people. This book is not beautiful enough to make up for the utter lack of context and meaningful information.
