Book Description

1592210120 978-1592210121 August 2002
Written by one of Africa’s leading intellectuals, this book is a tour de force in its bold imaginative and provocative analysis of the historical roots of the contemporary crisis in Africa and the potential for an African renaissance today.

"Professor Washington Okumu’s book is a landmark publication, which argues the case for the renaissance of Africa in robust terms, and within the historical context of the continent." —Professor Thomas R. Odhiambo, Hon. President, African Academy of Sciences

"This book provides a comprehensive account of Africa’s tragic past, tumultuous present, and immense potential. The book is a vital reference point for policy-makers concerned about how to tackle the challenges ahead." —Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, Executive Secretary, Global Coalition for Africa

"In a pioneering, authoritative and stimulating monograph, Professor Washington Okumu constructs a coherent and credible plan to promote the concept of renaissance in the mainstream of Africa’s socio-cultural and political life." —Professor Yusuf Fadl Hasan, Former Vice-Chancellor, University of Khartoum

"I welcome this contribution to the debate on Africa by a man who has personally contributed so much to the Continent. The strategy for realizing Africa’s potential is set out clearly: a joint effort and the recognition of joint responsibility is needed for a renaissance." —Rt Hon Donald Anderson MP, Chairman, Foreign Relations Committee, House of Commons, UK
