Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

East Africa may be one of the most photographed areas on the planet, but a good photographer can always find something new to show us. A male lion licking water from a sodden cub, a giraffe in midgallop as she negotiates a turn, and a stretching gray-headed kingfisher are all images that stick in the mind after perusing this book. Photographer Krasemann has an immediacy about his pictures that is appealing, both intimate (a sleeping colobus monkey) and artistic (a vulture backlit by a rain-cloud-filled sky). Bach's text is written in the form of journal entries, bringing the reader along with her on safari. She writes of rain on her tent's roof, hair so dusty, so exposed to the sun that it feels like straw, and watching predators stalk and consume their prey. Calling an African safari "sensory overload," the two authors provide the same overload to the reader. Although nothing can compare with experiencing Africa for yourself, this book is recommended because it comes very close to actually being there. Nancy Bent

5.0 out of 5 stars Just like if you were there, excellent !, January 27, 1999

Astonishing pictures, incredible text putting in words the incredible feelings associated with an African Safari in the Serengeti. Just came back from there and this book really gave me multiple flash backs.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice Pictures but ultimately not worth it, February 9, 2001

This review is from: African Wildlife: A Photographic Safari (Hardcover)
I happened to pass by this book at my local library, and I ended up reading all 150 unremarkable pages. This book is essentially a compilation of Bach's journal entries and Krasemann's photographs, and a lot of times, to the book's detriment, they have nothing to do with each other. The photographs are certainly nice, but the journal entries are useless. Bach's journal is basically 150 pages of bland animal descriptions. There is little else. We barely learn anything about the circumstances of her trip, the people she interacts with, or anything else about her experience. Instead the average sentence is something like, "Today we saw the lion, the great king of the jungle." Anybody could have written this. There is nothing unique about her experience, at least from what she shows us. I got through the first 90 pages of the book in forty five minutes, and only decided to finish it because it went by so fast and had decent pictures. But I recommend that you don't waste your time, if you have better resources available.
