Rare Funk at its Best...,
This review is from: Africana (Audio CD)
The Propositions were a 9 member Detroit Band who released only 3 singles in the early 70s. All members were 17 and under, yet unbelievably funky beyond their years. Apparently, they never released a full LP, but recorded enough tunes in a 1973 album to result in this well mixed and mastered gem of classic drums, bass, guitar and horn driven instrumental funk. Fans of the Westbound Sound in particular will really dig this... and the Westbound Connection shouldn't be surprizing. Some people might associate Detroit with the softer pop-Soul sounds of Motown, but fans of the early Ohio Players, Funkadelic and Junie will know that Detroit was also a heavy funk mecha. The liner notes in fact happen to describe the group as predecessors to the COUNTS (Bohannon's back up group who recorded one of my favorite raw instrumental funk albums of all time ITS WHAT'S UP FRONT THAT COUNTS.) This group is definitely right up there with not only the Counts, but Black Head, Soud Experience, Ripple and a number of other virtually forgotten funk powerhouses of the '70s... in conclusion... ultra obscure but mandatory listening ! ! !

I picked up this cd about 8 years ago and I still come back to it. Apparently this was a Detroit band of mainly teenagers. You wouldn't know it from the playing. These guys can vamp. Hard funk in the same vein as the Counts or S.O.U.L.
