5.0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading January 30, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book used historical sources from explorers, priests, and colonizers to describe the appearance of the indigenous peoples found in the Americas in the 14th, 15th, 16th centuries. From the witnesses own descriptions these people were dark copper-toned woolly-haired peoples often referred to by the witnesses as ethiopian and or negro. These are the ancestors so many so-call African-American elders spoke of to their children and grandchildren. This book should be required reading as well as be on every "black" family's book shelf. A fascinating read without the politics of the western scholar. I would also suggest another book entitled When Rocks Cry Out by Horace Butler.

This is a study I completely missed when it was published 20 years ago. Someone posted the cover in Facebook and that led me to investigate and eventually buy it. One of the least-told facts of world history is the centuries-old relationship between Native Americans and Africans, particularly in the pre-(European)-Colonial Americas. This monograph establishes this relationship in the first chapter, going on to explicate the construction of the concept of race as well as the conceptual, social and political impact of Eurocentric perceptions of the nonwhite world.

Anyone who is interested in any of these dynamics will find this book to be highly rewarding.

5.0 out of 5 stars very strong Book March 25, 2012
Format:Paperback
without a doubt this Book sheds light on so much from past centurys and times and doesn't have a spin on it to make it feel like a cut off. it goes all the way through. as a child hearing about Indian Blood in my African skin was so mind blowing and compelling and I wanted to do my Alex Hailey Roots tree and see where it would lead. books as this will take you on a journey back and also is very detailed and how ancestors told of stories and how certain things were and this book is very informative and a Must have and read.
