Sublime African jazz-funk,
By Dr. Slump (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Afrika (Audio CD)
Dyani, one of of the key members of the South African jazz scene of the 60s and 70s, departs somewhat from his earlier work with this album. Unlike his earlier albums such as Song for Biko, which featured Don Cherry, Afrika moves more into the realm of jazz-funk. It features a steel drummer - a rare breed in the jazz world. While the band's funky sound may take some getting used to, it makes for some really unique music, incorporating elements of African music as well as funk and jazz. Overall, it's a sublime and even quite moving album that doesn't sound quite like anything else.
