A b-movie in novel form, June 17, 2010
This review is from: Afrikorps (Paperback)
I won't complain about the writing. It was adaquate, I will complain about the author's choice in plot.
Not only does the author have a character named "Roman", but he also has him dressing up in a silly toga and expounding on the Bible.
We get rid of our nukes and our reactors, but the environment goes anyway!? Yeah, getting rid of nuclear power really helped! Isn't nuclear power pretty clean!?
Why the hell would the American biosphere care at all about what happens in the African continent? Isn't the entire world a barren wasteland? Don't they have their own problems to deal with? And they are somehow able to pacify Africa? As in a whole continent with just a few tanks? Does the author know just how large Africa is? Remember all those jokes about land-wars in Asia, the largest continent on Earth? Well, Africa is the second-largest!
Also one of the marauding bandits is apparently allowed to butcher captured women for his sadistic pleasure, when you'd think that breeding females would be an unthinkably valuable resource to barbarians living in a barren hell-hole of a planet, and yet he's just allowed to do that because it's fun. The other villains should have eliminated such an unstable individual immediately.
Also all the dialogue is melodramatic in the extreme. This is the future, not Lord of the Rings. And he used the word "column" in reference to the tank formation so much that I wanted to scream.
This is the first in a series...mind-bogglingly.

1st of a great action/adventure read!, October 4, 2000
This review is from: Afrikorps (Paperback)
I read and still have all 6 of this mini-series that is still an enjoyable read in the action/adventure genre. The world is an a post-holocaust state and people live in biospheres. A military armored unit led by an american captain named Abe Creighton go out of the bioshere into mutant and marauder-filled Africa, to find a mystery man named SHONA who exerts fearsome power. The pace is fast and furious with colorful characters. A must read for action fans!
