5.0 out of 5 stars This one is REALLY GREAT so don't listen to the naysayers
I have over 30 Diz pieces and have seen him a few times. This one, while more contemporary in that is an orchestral arrangement by Chico O' Farrill, is REALLY tremendous and along with Bahiana are my two favorite later Diz albums. It ain't bebop, it's latin and if you are listenin' to it wantin' bebop, you should put on a bebop album. I happen to really love any of...

2.0 out of 5 stars I Disagree with Rosalyn from NY
I bought this cd based on those comments and found that although it is Afro Cuban it has too much of a Tonight show big band sound. This was recorded in '75 and nowhere near what was done in the '40s. look elsewhere..

It ain't bebop, it's latin and if you are listenin' to it wantin' bebop, you should put on a bebop album. I happen to really love any of Diz's latin/afro-cuban albums. You can also hear latin songs on even his earliest Bluebird recordings and they are fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chico O'Farrill as major composer, March 6, 2001
This review is from: Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods (Audio CD)
Latin Jazz has never gotten the credit it deserves (did you hear Ken Burns mention it?), and Chico O'Farrill is unjustly left off most lists of our greatest 20th Century composers. The O'Farrill - Gillespie partnership goes back to the 1940s, and this album finds both of them, well after the era they made their names in, still at an absolute zenith of their creative ability. I would compare this to the Gil Evans - Miles Davis collaborations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, October 14, 1999

I disagree with the listener who thought that this had a "Tonight Show" band sound. Especially as to the first piece (which was the entire 1st side of the vinyl album when it came out), the arrangement and performances are varied and exciting. Dizzy's playing is excellent as well. I have found that many people who are rock fans with little exposure to jazz respond well to the first piece on this album, and think that it is quite exciting and interesting. Dizzy had made umpteen albums with his bop soloing over an acoustic quartet, and this album was an admirable attempt to give him a different style to play in.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not TYPICAL Dizzy Afro-Cuban!, October 13, 1999

However, I liked the CD very much. Though the CD was not what I expected from Dizzy Gillespie, because it can sound sort of contemporary in a "Hawaii 5-0" theme song kind of way, it is a wonderful album and is still a welcome addition to your Dizzy collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST JAZZ ALBUMS, January 30, 2008

Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods was the first jazz CD I have ever purchased. Dizzy Gillespie does the trumpet very well in this album and whos as great as Miles Davis my favorite one. It is also known as latin jazz. If you close your eyes, this music could take you on a journey into Cuba. I also have this album on LP and cassette and it is very awesome and this is one of my favorite albums of all time. For every jazz collection, this should present one of them.

I love all the songs in this CD which is one of my favorite cds of all time. This was the first Jazz cd that I bought and I was immediately loved by that genre so I bought some other jazz cds later but this still is my favorite of all of them. Dizzy Gillespie is a great trumpet player and is my favorite along with Miles Davis. This cd is a highly recommended masterpiece.
