Simple and beautiful,
By Hugh Lovell (Oakland, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Afro-Sambas of Powell & De Moraes (Audio CD)
This recording features just the clear, rich voice of Monica Salmaso and the vibrant, warm guitar of Paulo Bellinati. Together they create beautiful performances of these classic Brazilian songs. It does not matter whether you speak Portugese or not, these songs will stay in your heart for a long, long time. See also Monica Salmaso's newest recording "Trampolin."

Bellinati's arrangements and playing are masterful, and are perfectly complemented by Salmaso's cool, airy singing. There's nothing but one acoustic guitar and one voice on this album, and nothing more is needed. The Afro-Sambas are a song cycle composed in the mid 1960's by Vinicius de Moraes, the late poet laureate of Brasil, and guitar giant Baden Powell. Several of them have become Bossa Nova standards recorded by many artists. Paulo Bellinati has reassembled the songs in their original grouping and given us a definitive reading. (Bellinati's several solo Brasilian guitar albums are also excellent.)
