AfroSambaJazz: The Music of Baden Powell

While I am not willing to shower AfroSambaJazz with the highest hosannas accorded it by the industry hack and the previous reviewer, I have to admit it's quite a piece of work. The work of Baden Powell, though well-known in Brazil, has the misfortune in the US at least of being overshadowed by the work of the much better-known Antonio Carlos Jobim. For example, a number of friends and I each own many albums by Jobim, Joao Gilberto, and Luiz Bonfa but our introduction to Baden Powell came only via the world of jazz through Eumir Deodato's rendition of Berimbau. So the issue of this album is a grand opportunity to introduce Baden Powell's music to a wider audience.

On this album, Mario Adnet and Baden Powell's son Philippe Baden Powell collaborate with a stellar cast of Brazilian musicians to bring us AfroSambaJazz in the form of orchestral arrangements. The most impressive cut is Canto de Ossanha, but I also greatly enjoy Canto de Xango, Ritmo Afro, Canto de Yemanja, Pai, Alode, Berimbau, and Domingo de Ramos.

This CD comes attractively packaged in digipak form and is accompanied by a handsome and very useful booklet that contains pictures, notes about the compositions and commentary on Mario Adnet and Philippe Baden Powell. If quality in music means something to you, you should enjoy this as I did. Pick it up while it is still available, you won't be disappointed.

Been an Adnet fan for many years. These are beautiful renditions of Baden's music by a wondefrul cast of musicians! Breezy brazillian feel throughout, highlighted by the never-recorded "Canto de Yansan"! Eagerly awaiting the follow-up to this recording.
