This third book in the series, originally published by Just Us Books, includes the inquisitive Afro-Bets Kids and their teacher, Mr. Amegashie, as he introduces them to Africa's rich history.

The Afro-Bets Kids: Langston, Nandi, Glo, Stef, Tura, and Robo are together again. This time they explore the continent of Africa as they listen to stories their teacher, Mr. Amageshie, shares with them. From learning about the early tribes of Eygpt to the rolling hills of Africa's natural beauty, here comes a complete and perfect introduction to this vast continent.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 2-5-- The Afro-Bets kids are a group of six black elementary-aged classmates. Mr. Amegashie, referred to as the storyteller, weaves the rich history and geography of Africa into a narrative for them. Beginning with ancient Africa, he relates how Africa had created great kingdoms and had made great strides long before modern-day powers existed. He also discusses the people, land features, animals, arts, and culture of the continent. As a resource for reports and background reading, this book gives a very basic overview. The illustrations are a mixture of full-color and black-and-white photographs and drawings; occasionally, the inclusion of the Afro-Bets kids on the same page with the other illustrations is distracting. There is a glossary but no index, and the three maps are disappointing as they are small, indistinct, and not very informative. The use of a storyteller to relay factual information is an interesting approach, and the Afro-Bets kids project positive images. A book that could be read aloud in story hours and that is easy enough for elementary-grade readers. --Jeanette Lambert, LaVega School, Waco, TX

4.0 out of 5 stars Afro-Bets do excellent job, February 17, 2000
By A Customer
This book was purchased for my 8 year old daughter as a Black History month present. She has read the entire book and has as enjoyed looking at the pictures. It held her attendtion and got her more interested in Africa--which made me extremely happy. The way the book was layed out allowed her to get a better understanding of what was going on. Using actual photographs with the cartoons really gave her a different approach to reading. She was allowed to see the actual events and dress of Africa in certain areas. That's what drew me to the book in the first place. If an individual is teaching or introducing a child to Africa, this is a good book to do so with.
