Biography

After 7 emerged in the '90s as a solid contemporary ensemble able to perform creditably in either vintage soul or modern new jack and urban styles. The Indianapolis trio

includes brothers Melvin and Kevin Edmonds (the brothers of producer/performer Babyface) and Keith Mitchell (cousin of Babyface's longtime partner L.A. Reid). They signed with Virgin in 1989 and had immediate ... Read more in Amazon's After 7 Store

Customer Reviews

I bought it because I love a couple of their songs.
JudyPudy
This is a classic album, by far one of the best albums released in the late 1980s.
Arnel
It is sad but they just don't make music like this anymore.

After 7's debut is an almost-perfect r&B record. This takes me back to a time when R&B had its innocence, when people sang about LOVE and ROMANCE and wanting to treat you right. There were no lyrics about "freak" this or "thong" that. This record shows Babyface at one of his peaks as a producer, as he is involved in virtually every track on this CD. It's difficult for me to point out a standout track since you can play this CD from start to finish without hitting the "next" buttom. Highly recommended. After you hear this record, you'll never want to listen to anything that's been released in the last 18 months.

i really enjoyed this disc when it first came out.despite the family connection with La&Babyface it never overides the talents of After 7.i always felt they were underrated. Can't Stop was a jam ready or not and one night were also good songs.these Brothers can sing.

After 7's debut disc was released at time when almost every R&B record released was A-1.Two-thirds of the trio are the brothers of producer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, and the other third is the cousin of Antonio "L.A." Reid; the two produced the majority of the album, which features three smash hits and a host of other likable tracks. The singles released were Heat Of The Moment, Can't Stop and Ready Or Not. Can't Stop & Heat Of The Moment were both up-tempo dance numbers while Ready Or Not is one of the best slow jams released in 1989. However the one song to me that makes the CD a classic is "One Night," an urban adult contemporary composition that was never released; it showcases Melvin and Kevon in an impressive vocal exchange over a mid-tempo rhythm.

After 7's debut is a funky mix of early babyface (LaFace) inspiration. The uptempo grooves are great and mixing with the sweet songs of love, inspiration and deceit (Sayonara). This album includes their smash singles; "Can't Stop", "Heat of the Moment" and the excellent "One Night". It is a shame to see that these guys have disbanded as a group (I think the Very Best of album was their last as group...) since they provided the world with harmonies as they were meant to sung. No doubt about it, these guys sure can belt ou the tunes and harmonies...far better than the exaggerated (soul-less) antics of groups like Jodeci, Dru Hill and even Boyz II Men!

having seen them live twice, i know they're the real deal. smooth, soulful, and very polished, after 7's self titled debut album delivers where others fail. their best song, arguably to date, is "ready or not," featured on this album. i own all their cds, and have found that although they have a lot of great songs, the best ones are the ones that are written by babyface. as far as disbanding, i think only keith mitchell has left the group: the other two, kevon and melvin (brothers of babyface), are still together. besides, they did the majority of the singing.

This CD may only have 8 songs on it. But each one of them is seriously all that. Its like you can almost feel what they guys in After 7 are singing about. I still remember hearing "Cant Stop". I didnt know who it was then. But when i found out. I knew i'd found another great singing group. "One Night" is hot as well as almost every other cut of this standout CD.

I dont care what anyone says. This CD deserves much props and After 7 deserves more recognition for bringing the goods on this CD.

Check this CD out. You'll wonder why you didnt get it sooner. Those are my words.

I was in 9th grade when this album came out, and I had a major crush on a girl who was in the 12th grade. Listening to all these songs back then, I imagined it was she and I. Corny now, I know, and she's married with children, but these songs bring that 15 year old, sweaty palm feelings all over again. God bless the New Jack era! Best songs on this album are "One night", "Ready or not", and "Can't stop". They just don't make music this good anymore.

If I could go back in time and guide any rising star into learning how to be an R&B act with the power to crossover to mainstream, I'd simply point to After 7's "Can't Stop". Slower than "In the Heat of the moment", but not a bonafide R&B slow jam per se, "Can't Stop" has an array of melodies that, in this day and age, would be considered as adult contemporary. While "Ready Or Not" may have done well in the mainstream, "Can't Stop" somehow nailed the group as being not only "here & now", but "here to stay". It's sad that there were just so many acts out back then to smother each other. After 7 could run rings around what is trying desperately to pass for R&B/Soul these days. Don't forget, "R&B" stands for rhythm and blues. These days the rhythm is quite questionable, there's no blues, and if you're looking for soul, it's long left the building. Come back, After 7, and show them how it's really done.
