5.0 out of 5 stars A voice between Roy Orbison and Hank December 15, 2004
Format:Audio CD
Several years ago my brother sent me this cd and at first I must admit I didn't get it. Gilmore's voice threw me but every once in a while I picked it up again and gradually (as Jimmie sings- sometimes we're a little slow in catchin on) the beauty of these songs just sank in and Gilmore's voice began to sound perfectly suited to them to my ears. Now years later I listen to this now and then and consider it one of my favorite country records. My brother passed on a few years ago and everytime I listen to Jimmie Dale Gilmore I think of him and thank him for introducing me to this great music.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my most cherished albumns June 20, 2002
By Virgil
Format:Audio CD
It's a crime that Jimmie Dale Gilmore isn't as well known as a country singer. This albumn is one of the best crafted and beautiful country albumns of the last twenty years as far as I'm concerned. From "Tonight I think I'm gonna go downtown" to the "Story of You" there isn't a clunker among them.
Gilmore voice is hauntingly beautiful and his songwriting is second to none. Perhaps no Texas singer/songwriter except Townes Van Zandt can match Gilmore's talents. This is great country music and great music period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Great June 27, 2002
Format:Audio CD
This one would get 5 stars just for the track "Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown". A deceptively simple song that will haunt you once you've heard it. The rest of the recording does not dissapoint after this stellar lead track. Gilmore's unique voice and spare songwriting style make for a satisfying listen. Anyone who has an interest in Alt.Country or any other musical style that drifts outside the commercial margins would be well advised to check out anything by Jimmie Dale Gilmore.

5.0 out of 5 stars This one is a Classic June 23, 2004
Format:Audio CD
I keep this CD in constant rotation and it never grows old. Its hard to pick a highlight when all the songs are so delightful, from "Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown" all the way through "Story of You." As a singer and songwriter, Jimmie Dale Gilmore is a Texas treasure, and he really shines on this CD. Stephen Bruton's production is clean and tasty, and James Pennebaker's fiddle is magical. Get it, play it, love it, and buy copies for all your friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Existential in Texas May 10, 2000
Format:Audio CD
Yes. Existential in Texas. It's Texastentialism where country meets the wide open spaces of the heart and soul. It's where "my mind's got a mind of its own" and where you always "go to sleep alone" and where, unless you take Jimmie Dale's advice to "don't be a stranger to your heart", you'll live in alienation and separation. Alone is about all we have. These are superbly crafted songs with unobtrusive musicians playing unpretentious arrangements. Take an existential leap of faith and buy this album and go on a "midnight train" to the expanse of your lonely heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars One Of Nashville's Great Unappreciated Voices February 22, 2000
Format:Audio CD
It's say to say the song that attracted me to this album was the only one on the album he didn't write himself. "My Mind's Got A Mind Of Its Own" is a happy little party tune by fellow neglected country artist Butch Hancock. Still, as both a singer and a songwriter, Gilmore ranks with Hancock, Iris DeMent, and Hal Ketchum as one of the great country artists neglected by the press of hat acts like Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson, who are to be avoided by purists.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hank Williams survives because... February 28, 2008
Format:Audio CD
The first note one hears is the ache. The heartbreaking yearning that says this is truth with wistfullness and a understanding that those who ever listened to a lonesome dove, who were ever in love, who sat by the radio, and who hoped that better days were coming next but knowing that they were probably not.

Jimmie Dale Gilmore has the same pure country Hank Williams voice that evokes a history of American music. He sings like Larry McMurtry writes.

"Tonight I Think I'm Going to Go Downtown", a signature song, is all one needs to hear. Jimmie Dale sings it like he means it. The lost of a woman, the wanderlust, the bright lights of neon that blinks beckons forlonely.

The rest of the songs on the CD continue to follow the trail of being blessed, being bereft, being besotton, being bedded, and becoming the man who beloves, ultimately belives.

A modern classic CD by one of the great traditionist singers of Americana

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic music! February 23, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I love this CD! I like the feel of the songs, i love his voice, and the instruments. I have never liked modern "tear in my beer" country music with the phony accent. This is REAL music! Gilmore has such a soulful voice! If all country were like this, I'd be a country music fan for life! It seems very bluesy with the steel guitar and violin and "waltzing" bass on some songs.
One reviewer said he thought Gilmore's other albums were better than this. This is the only cd of his I have so I can't say but I can't believe his other work is even better then this. I can't imagine "better" than this.
