5.0 out of 5 stars Active Management of the Third Stage, July 22, 2010
This review is from: After-Birth Of Cool (MP3 Download)
Chris Graham's recording debut, "Afterbirth of the Cool", is clearly a LABOR of love. Graham has taken on the clever task of expressing the miracle of human life through song. The album CROWNS with a song entitled the 471 lb. Little Girl. Graham has stated in interviews that this song is meant to enshrine the genesis of his Mother's life. This subdued inception is an aural tapestry depicting Graham's grandfather holding his infant mother, arms outstretched, in the sky above the pride for all to see. The next installment in this program paints the anxiety and violence of childbirth in "Punchin' Trout". This song is a reprise on the story of childbirth, from the in-utero perspective, of a yet-to-be-born pugilist breaking free from his his flesh prison. The tune "1957" is named for the birth year of actor Daniel Day Lewis, who plays Daniel Plainview in the 2007 film "There Will Be Blood", archiving the birth of Union Oil. Sibrahorn is actually from 'Sibra' (Société intercommunale des bus de la région annécienne), a Brazilian transit company; and 'horn', a colloquialism for a brass instrument. It is a hybrid nomenclature which blends the potential for a fresh start (or rebirth) on an omnibus excursion and the linear freedom of the saxophone. "Our Time" gallops at a faster tempo while the audience sonically anticipates diminishing time intervals between contractions. The lessons of the father to the son are captured with this Greek mythological tribute, "Icarus"; as we are reminded not to fly to closely to the sun. And as the fait accompli, Graham gives us "Salt and Ice". This graphic tune portrays the convergence of perspiration from a mother's brow and nurse-provided ice cubes. Graham takes on the controversial subject of Active v. Passive Management in the Third Stage of Birth in this chapter. Graham stakes out an unusually firebrand position; favoring the reduction of maternal fatalities with the usage of active management versus the near absent benefits of natural birth with passive management. When it comes to Mother's, Graham takes clamping and severing umbilical cords prior to placenta delivery personally.
