In a world shatteringly altered by a nuclear bomb, Philip Singer finds himself in the unlikely role of leader for his family. His father, awayaway from home during the blast, may be dead. Philip's mother, usually competent and crisp, is desperately injured and needs immediate medical help. His brother Matt, whose charm and intelligence have always overshadowed Philip's own awkwardness, is sick and weak. And Matt's girlfriend Cara, whom Philip secretly adores is terrified. If any of them are to live through the next dew hours, Philip has to take charge. He must find them food, and water, and first aid in a contaminated, burning city. And Philip has to face what no human being ever faced before- life, after the bomb.

5.0 out of 5 stars years later, August 4, 2009
This review is from: After the Bomb (Paperback)
I read this book when I was in 5th grade. I'm 19 now, and to this day, I still remember the impact that book had on me. I remember imaging the descriptions in the book and how they gave me the chills. A year or two ago I tried finding it in the local library, but they didn't even have it in the system. I really want to read it again. So glad I found it on here!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sticks with you., March 13, 2008

I read this book in 5th or 6th grade. I'm turning 30 this year and the themes and elements of this book have stuck with me over the years. Back in '89 it seemed like "the bomb" was inevitable and this book did expressed the horrors of nuclear holocaust, and the personal cost better than any other book, movie or TV show that I was exposed to as an 11-year old.

I'm happy to see this book is still being read by young people today.

4.0 out of 5 stars After the Bomb, October 27, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: After the Bomb (Paperback)
Genre: Sad Story
Philip, Matt, Mother, Father, Friend Cara, expireance a nuclear bomb. Philip has to take his burnt mother to the hospital all alone. He helps save lives and gets his mother to a Burnt Center. His brother and him go looking for his father.
What I liked most about this book is it makes you not want to stop reading. It has sad and happy things. It sounds like it really happened.
What I didn't like was the begining, because it didn't grab my attention right away.
My favotite character is Philip. I like Philip because it was all up to him to help his mom and help other people and he is a hero.
"Wait a munute!" the nurse cried, noticing Philip for the first time, and checking the number. "She's out of turn! the next patient should be 24." "Please! Philip cried. "Please take her!" "Theres only room for 12 orderly? Bring out the next patient." "Is this your mother, son?" the doctor asked. "Yes!" The doctor berely hesitated. "Nurse don't hold us up. Give her the shot. Lets keep things moving. Go on, son. Take ger out." Pg. 149. This is my favorite scene and it is on that page number.
What I would say about this book to someone else is that this is a great book to read and I would suggest it to them. It grabs your attention.
One question I have after reading this book is: What happens with his father, his mother, and all the distruction?
My strongest reason for recommending this book is it's a very good book. It is mistereous and it's very interesting. I loved reading this book.
