5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Surviving a Breakup
This book was a life-saver for me. I would highly recommend it to anyone going through a painful breakup. I bought a bunch of self-help books when my breakup happened, and this was far and away the most helpful, insightful, comforting book of all. The authors did a wonderful job with interviewing a wide array of women going through the same pain. When you feel like the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Advice for difficult times
In this book, dozens of women tell their breakup stories with poignancy and wit, giving the reader not just the insight about thoughts and feelings, but some great suggestions about what to do to heal, to grow, and to move on. The authors got the idea for this book when both of them, within six months of each other, ended significant relationships. Watrous and...

When you feel like the only one in the world feeling the way you do, it's great to know that you're not alone. This is one of the most helpful books I've ever read. Buy it, read it, and feel like you'll actually survive the breakup.

Just a few pages into this book, I felt instantly better. It's not that you forget all the pain you've been through dealing with your breakup, it's just that reading about all these women dealing with the same pain, emptiness, loneliness and confusion makes you instantly feel less pain, emptiness, loneliness and confusion. Especially wonderful about this book is that it deals with male/female and female/female relationships, the latter relationship one that most books overlook. I've recommended it to many of my broken-hearted friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars We Get By With A Little Help From Our Friends, January 18, 2000
This review is from: After the Breakup: Women Sort Through the Rubble and Rebuild Lives of New Possibilities (Paperback)
After the Breakup is full to bursting with great commisseration and advice from women going through breakups. If you are or ever have been going through a breakup and have asked yourself, "Am I the only one feeling this way?", this book is for you! Although my breakup was a year ago, when a friend shared this book with me recently I really dug it. It's such a relief to hear the strong, and sometimes scared, voices of other women going through the same craziness. Breaking up can feel very alienating and lonely. After the Breakup provides a chorus of affirmation.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book could save your life and make you laugh!, January 10, 2000
This review is from: After the Breakup: Women Sort Through the Rubble and Rebuild Lives of New Possibilities (Paperback)
After the Breakup, et al., is a one-of-a-kind resource for women who have experienced or are experiencing a breakup from a significant non-marital relationship. It's unique because it particularly addresses non-marital relationships which tend to be overlooked and/or minimized in other breakup resources. It's also unique because it addresses such a diverse range of women, diverse in age, sexual orientation, and length of relationship. The book is fun to read because it is based on women's personal stories, so it's like having a room full of women who understand what you are going through and can assure you that things will get better. It's also wonderful to read about all of the different ways women cope with breakups and all of the kinds of issues that come up with each different case. Finally, the book is positive, well-structured and well-researched, and provides many solutions for the difficult emotional and physical rubble that comes out of breaking up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, June 18, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: After the Breakup: Women Sort Through the Rubble and Rebuild Lives of New Possibilities (Paperback)
I ordered this book after my girlfriend and I broke up in a difficult situation. This book was so wonderful, it kept me sane, and reminded me to trust myself. It was a comfort during the ground zero stage, and later allowed a sigh of relief, as life came out of that stage. All along the way it was like having other women to associate how you were feeling with, and it was a great source of comfort, after the support of a partner was lost. I would reccomend this book to every woman, even before a breakup, so that they are always prepared!!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Woobie, March 11, 2003

I picked up this book and was immediately comforted. I searched through shelves and shelves of books before I found this perfect piece of work. I carry it with me where ever I go to shed light on each day. What's great, is reading this book really makes you feel like you are doing something to help you move forward after a painful break up. I found it especially interesting all the different types of people, ages, sexual orientation, etc. that went through the exact same thing. This book breaks barriers and had my smiling during a time I thought it might never be possible again. Thank you to the authors for giving me back hope.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for any women dealing with a breakup!, January 24, 2000
This review is from: After the Breakup: Women Sort Through the Rubble and Rebuild Lives of New Possibilities (Paperback)
This is a very honest and open book on how Women get through and grow from breakups. It is very helpful to know your not the only one feeling a certain way or having difficulty getting past a certain point in the after couple era. I wish I could have had this book 8yrs ago when I went through my divorce I would not have felt so alone. This is a must read for anyone going through the pain and isolation of a separation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Advice for difficult times, December 19, 2005

This review is from: After the Breakup: Women Sort Through the Rubble and Rebuild Lives of New Possibilities (Paperback)
Watrous and Honeychurch do not claim to be experts, at least not the kind with credentials and degrees. But they have suffered through traumatic separations and describe themselves simply as "women's issues freelance writers who have recently rebuilt their lives after difficult breakups"; both live in the San Francisco Bay area.
Many of the women interviewed describe the experience of standing amid the debris feeling shocked, scared, angry, alone, sad, relieved, guilty -- virtually immobilized by a shifting set of intense emotions.
In the final section, called "Settling In," the authors treat the process of moving forward with one's life, the time when it is possible to close the doors on the old relationship and consider the possibility of a new one (or not -- the authors encourage women to embrace and enjoy their stronger, single selves).
This section of the book addresses the dilemma of whether and how to remain friends with an ex; how to overcome inevitable emotional setbacks, such as the pain of learning that your ex has moved on to his or her next relationship; and how to identify and benefit from the positive changes that have resulted from what began as a traumatic event.
However, it is safe to say that almost every woman going through a breakup trauma -- whether she be the person who leaves or the one left behind -- will find something in these pages to help smooth out the rocky road.

4.0 out of 5 stars Its one of the few breakup books with lots of content, March 11, 2005
This review is from: After the Breakup: Women Sort Through the Rubble and Rebuild Lives of New Possibilities (Paperback)
There are a ton of breakup books, heck it is almost its own genre. This book, while not written by pyschologists does have some worthwhile material in it. The book is unique because it also has referrences to same sex relationships. The book incorporates many aspects of a breakup and the aftermath.
The book starts with ground zero, the actual breakup itself. Whether you initiated the breakup or not, its still painful. Theu do suggest that it is going to take some time to get over the shock and the initial pain. Then the book has your focus turned on you; how to take good care of yourself. The book then moves onto rebuilding your life, your home, and your new social circle. The book then deals with settling in and accepting the breakup and offers some suggestions on moving on.
I liked the book simply because it offers a range of advice. No silly picture, no fake conversations, no fancy pictures. This book gives you the meat and potatoes of trying to navigate your way through your breakup.

5.0 out of 5 stars A helpful find, July 8, 2002

This review is from: After the Breakup: Women Sort Through the Rubble and Rebuild Lives of New Possibilities (Paperback)
This book soothed me during a bad time. It's so great to read about breakups from the point of view of people who've gone through them instead of just getting the opinions of experts (who sometimes don't seem to know very much). Reading this book was a lot like basking in the comfort of friends.
