In 1940, Sally Bowles, that spirited character from Christopher Isherwood's Goodbye to Berlin, decides to leave her baby daughter with her parents in the country and return to London. There, despite the Blitz, she is determined to live life to the fullest. Moreover, she wants to find the love of her life—the elusive Theo. Despite Theo's absence, Sally cuts swathes across the cold, charmless, and secretive trio of Briggs, Pym, and Bruno. In the late 1990s, young American academic Greg Peters is trying to piece together the missing links of Sally's life for a new biography. He contacts Bruno in London and finds a man tauntingly evasive, knowledgeable but unwilling to comment. But eventually Bruno thaws, leading Greg on a fascinating and tantalizing trail of snippets, facts, and fantasies about the real Sally Bowles.

About the Author
Hilary Bailey was born in 1936 and was educated at thirteen schools before attending Newnham College, Cambridge. Her first novel was published in 1975 and she has since written thirteen novels and a short biography. She lives in West London.

Very disappointing,

Such an interesting premise ... what happened to Sally Bowles after the Cabaret? What a disappointing execution of a potentially fascinating premise. Sally's conversion to Communism is impossible to swallow. From 'divine decadence' to Marxism? It makes little sense given any of the myriad characterizations of Sally, and the author does not deign to give us any possible reason for her revolutionary change in outlook. Part of her charm has been in her blindness to the political climate that, unbeknownst to her, shapes and guides her. After the Cabaret, in ignoring that tradition, leaves the reader with the impression that the author wanted to write a story that had nothing to do with the Isherwood, or Broadway, or Film images of Sally. The whole project smacks of an attempt to cash in on the Sally Bowles name; this book has nothing to do with the Sally I know. That combined with the boring, mudane, turgid, never-ending, meandering prose just killed this book for me. Don't waste your time.
