Book Description

October 10, 1999
A magical saga, reminiscent of the best of CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien. Beautifully written in a refreshing style, and illustrated by one of Britain's leading graphic artists, this is the story of four friends, their picaresque lives, and the mo ral choices that confront them. An influential and wildly popular novel in Sweden, AFTER THE CAMPFIRES transports you into new worlds.

Tim is a young man leading a carefree, wandering life in the Wild Boar Forest with his three friends. He loves this life as he loves his companions, and it doesn't occur to him that he might ever lose either. However, his happiness comes to an abrupt end when the foursome, through a series of chance encounters, becomes involved in a chain of events that hint at a conspiracy aimed at the Realm itself, threatening to plunge it into civil war.

While magicians scheme and different factions move to achieve their own ends, Tim refuses to accept the significance ascribed to him.

AFTER THE CAMPFIRES has been translated by Laurie Thompson, one of Britain's leading Swedish scholars and translators. A special series of engravings by the British artist David Bromley has been commissioned to illustrate the work.

This review is from: After the Campfires (Hardcover)
I got this book after stumbling onto the author's website and pretty much agreeing with all his thoughts on fantasy literature. This is an inventive but still fairly mainstream fantasy story. There are no grand plans or prophesies to be fulfilled here, just a story about a group of friends in a medieval, mythical land, who impusively help a complete stranger and end up embroiled with several ne'er do well characters. The characters are very entertaining and the land and story sit at the more realistic end of fantasy.
It is a fantasy story told for the sake of being a fantasy story, kind of like Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and Grey Mouser series but even more tongue in cheek. The author does not need to resort to the usual shock gimics of ultraviolence, medieval torture, grisly horror, scantily clad female warriors etc. to get the story across. It is a good book for the younger reader because the writing is straightforward and the protagonists are young adults. The book also has some very good illustrations, although I wish there were more.
