This review is from: After the Campfires (Hardcover)
I got this book after stumbling onto the author's website and pretty much agreeing with all his thoughts on fantasy literature. This is an inventive but still fairly mainstream fantasy story. There are no grand plans or prophesies to be fulfilled here, just a story about a group of friends in a medieval, mythical land, who impusively help a complete stranger and end up embroiled with several ne'er do well characters. The characters are very entertaining and the land and story sit at the more realistic end of fantasy.
It is a fantasy story told for the sake of being a fantasy story, kind of like Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and Grey Mouser series but even more tongue in cheek. The author does not need to resort to the usual shock gimics of ultraviolence, medieval torture, grisly horror, scantily clad female warriors etc. to get the story across. It is a good book for the younger reader because the writing is straightforward and the protagonists are young adults. The book also has some very good illustrations, although I wish there were more. |
