Review

"After Cancer Treatment is a hands-on guide to survival issues: exercise, diet, fatigue, mental health, spirituality, and how to seek assistance from both Western and alternative medicine... Highly recommended." -- Library Journal

"This is one you need... Silver offers excellent descriptions of mind-body treatments... I like that she understands." -- Cure

"Very helpful, meaningful, and insightful for those who are journeying through cancer, and those who have recovered. Dr. Silver's book encompasses not just emotional and physical healing but spiritual as well. Her credentials as a young mother and cancer survivor, in addition to being a physiatrist with a specialization in rehab medicine, make her work both authoritative and compassionate." -- Paula J. Anastasia, R.N., M.N., O.C.N., Outpatient Gynecology--Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles

"A diagnosis of cancer changes one's life forever. After her diagnosis, Dr. Silver chose to continue healing -- this time, healing herself. Her book is a gift to all cancer patients." -- Irene Pollin, MSW, author of Taking Charge and Medical Crisis Counseling

"Dr. Silver, who has faced cancer as both doctor and patient, has written an excellent practical guide for patients navigating the psychological and physical demands of a diagnosis of cancer." -- Raymond Lenhard, M.D., past president, American Cancer Society

"Dr. Silver is a remarkably insightful patient and physician. She has built upon her own professional experiences in rehabilitative medicine and her personal experience with a breast cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment. She seeks to make lemonade out of lemons, and she has done so with remarkable success." -- Eric P. Winer, M.D., director, Breast Oncology Center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

"Like her practice, it draws on evidence-based medicine about what works to help people heal." -- Elizabeth Cooney, Dispatch

"An invaluable reference for patients and health professionals as they navigate the murky waters of cancer treatment and survivorship." -- Stephanie Ross, PhD, Oncology

"Belongs in any serious health library or collection focusing on cancer recovery." -- Midwest Book Review

Product Description

At age 36, Julie Silver was enjoying an exciting career as a physician at the Harvard Medical School and a rewarding personal life as a mother, wife, and award-winning writer. But she had the sense that something was wrong. Two years and multiple doctors later, she was diagnosed with the breast cancer she had suspected all along and was catapulted into the role of cancer patient.

Like many cancer patients who experience serious side effects from treatment, Dr. Silver emerged from therapy feeling not better, but exhausted and physically devastated. As she worked to heal herself, she became determined to write a book to help others recover after cancer treatment.

Here Dr. Silver shares her own cancer journey and offers a step-by-step plan for physical healing, including exercise and diet recommendations and instructions for fighting fatigue, monitoring mood, and overcoming setbacks. Dr. Silver's advice comes from the heart -- and from her experience as both a cancer survivor and a doctor who has spent her career helping people heal from serious illnesses and injuries. No matter where they are in their own journey with cancer, readers will find After Cancer Treatment a personal, practical, and powerful guide to recovery.

5.0 out of 5 stars AFTER CANCER TREATMENT belongs in any serious health library or collection focusing on cancer recovery., March 5, 2007
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
Plenty of books discuss how to handle a diagnosis of cancer and how to consider and handle treatment - but very few survey what happens next. AFTER CANCER TREATMENT: HEAL FAST, BETTER, STRONGER comes from a doctor who is a cancer rehabilitation specialist and a breast cancer survivor: her guide blends personal experience and professional insights to offer up a plan for healing. From how to recognize withdrawal signs for medications to understanding the beneficial effects of proper nutrition, AFTER CANCER TREATMENT belongs in any serious health library or collection focusing on cancer recovery.

5.0 out of 5 stars After cancer treatment, May 25, 2007
By J. Gehman (San Jose, CA United States) - See all my reviews

A must have book for all those people recovering from treatment for cancer,
whether surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation or a combination of treatments.
Dr Silver, a physician specializing in rehabilitation, and herself a cancer
survivor, explains how to deal with many issues. She has a common-sense,
down-to-earth approach on how to deal with a wide variety of side effects
including lack of energy, loss of appetite, and many others. She offers
helpful suggestions for coping with each of these problems and how to get
your life back to as "normal" as possible.
