5.0 out of 5 stars AFTER CANCER TREATMENT belongs in any serious health library or collection focusing on cancer recovery., March 5, 2007
This review is from: After Cancer Treatment: Heal Faster, Better, Stronger (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book) (Paperback)
Plenty of books discuss how to handle a diagnosis of cancer and how to consider and handle treatment - but very few survey what happens next. AFTER CANCER TREATMENT: HEAL FAST, BETTER, STRONGER comes from a doctor who is a cancer rehabilitation specialist and a breast cancer survivor: her guide blends personal experience and professional insights to offer up a plan for healing. From how to recognize withdrawal signs for medications to understanding the beneficial effects of proper nutrition, AFTER CANCER TREATMENT belongs in any serious health library or collection focusing on cancer recovery.

A must have book for all those people recovering from treatment for cancer,
whether surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation or a combination of treatments.
Dr Silver, a physician specializing in rehabilitation, and herself a cancer
survivor, explains how to deal with many issues. She has a common-sense,
down-to-earth approach on how to deal with a wide variety of side effects
including lack of energy, loss of appetite, and many others. She offers
helpful suggestions for coping with each of these problems and how to get
your life back to as "normal" as possible.

This review is from: After Cancer Treatment: Heal Faster, Better, Stronger (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book) (Paperback)
As a health and fitness professional of 25 years, breast cancer survivor, and wellness coach (coaching survivors), she is right on target with this book in helping survivors think through what they need to do to live their healthiest life. She gives a personal perspective as well as evidence based guidelines. I highly recommend this book!

This review is from: After Cancer Treatment: Heal Faster, Better, Stronger (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book) (Paperback)
Dr. Silver's writings in this volume are as approachable as her extensive work in the post-polio field, only with this topic, she brings the additional perspective of being a cancer survivor. At Ann's Place, our community cancer support agency, we feel comfortable recommending this book as a resource to our clients.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical Inspiration for Cancer Patients, July 24, 2011

The doctor who wrote this book had breast cancer herself. She knows what cancer patients are thinking during treatment; how will I ever get my body back to normal! This book was actually recommended by the P.A. on my Oncology team and it's outstanding. It includes information on nutrition, exercise to boost energy and also time saving steps and prioritizing everyday tasks to make sure you get what you want out of your efforts. CAM therapies are discussed and there is so much more! I would recommend this book to anyone going through breast cancer treatment, at any stage!

4.0 out of 5 stars A thorough resource, October 30, 2010

This review is from: After Cancer Treatment: Heal Faster, Better, Stronger (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book) (Paperback)
Well worth the reading, and well worth acting on the advice it contains. This book does presume, though, at least I felt it did, that everyone lives with relatively easy accessibility to major medical resources such as rehabilitation specialist doctors, etc. That is not so in my situation, and having more information on how to work with an internist, oncologist, etc. to create a rehab program during cancer treatment recovery would have been really helpful. Strongly recommend this book for the solid and inspiring counsel it does offer.

The author writes that when she was finished with the medical treatment for cancer she was told by her doctor, "Start living your normal life." That was impossible, given her fatigue, mental fogginess and lack of the ability for sustained attention. I was given nearly the same instruction when my bone marrow cancer went into a good partial remission. (Don't you just love doctor=speak?) Dr. Silver has written a book needed by cancer survivors and their families and friends the addresses what to do when the medical treatment ends. It has my highest recommendation.
